LaserBeams™
LaserBeams™ is a high-focus balance activity that challenges students to move with control, patience, and strategy. One student traverses a balance beam while others create “laser” obstacles with pool noodles, forcing the traverser to read the environment, plan ahead, and adapt in real time. It works well as a balance challenge, skill station, or featured activity in any parkour unit.

Activity Flow
Students create a long balance beam by placing Precision Sticks™ end to end. One student begins as the Traverser, and the other students become Laser Technicians standing beside the beam with pool noodles. Each Laser Technician places their “laser” in a fixed position over their section of beam. The Traverser must make it across without touching the ground or the lasers. If they touch a laser or step off, they get back on and continue. Once the Traverser completes the course, everyone rotates forward one space so a new student becomes the Traverser.
Setup
- Place four to eight Precision Sticks™ in a straight, continuous line.
- Use American Parkour’s NoodleBots™, or have students hold pool noodle “lasers” perpendicular to the beam.
- Set up multiple lines to keep students moving, and plan an activity for students who would otherwise be waiting in line.
- Optional: Mark a return lane so partners can rotate efficiently.
Rules
- One student is the Traverser; the others are Laser Technicians.2
- Laser Technicians choose a laser position over their section of beam and hold it still.
- The Traverser attempts to cross the full beam without touching the ground or a laser.
- If the Traverser touches the ground or a laser, they safely reset and continue from the nearest appropriate point or from the start, depending on the level of challenge.
- Laser positions stay consistent until the Traverser passes that section.
- After each successful crossing, everyone rotates forward one position.
Keep turns moving at a steady pace so each attempt lasts about 20–30 seconds.
Imagination Queues and Game Variations
To boost engagement and creativity, try themes like:
-
Secret Agent Mission: The Traverser is sneaking through a high-security vault without tripping the alarm.
-
Museum Security Grid: Lasers protect priceless artifacts, and only careful movement gets you through.
-
Spy Training Course: Students must stay calm, balanced, and precise to complete their mission.
-
Jedi: Imagine the noodles are glowing laser swords that you must avoid to save the universe
Skill Level Adjustments – Challenge and Support
- Challenge – Tighter window: Lower some lasers or place them closer together to demand more precise movement.
- Challenge – Momentum: Require the Traverser to keep moving forward with no pauses longer than 2 seconds.
-
Support – Fewer lasers: Use only every other Laser Technician at first.
-
Support – Higher and lower lasers: Hold high noodles higher and low noodles lower so students can focus on balance before adding more complexity.
-
Support – Wider resets: Allow the Traverser to step off, reset calmly, and rejoin at the last completed section.
-
Support – Teacher-guided planning: Pause before each attempt and ask students to point out their route before they begin.
Feedback Mechanisms
Encourage concise, useful cues such as: “eyes forward,” “move slowly,” “whole foot on,” “plan before you step,” and “reset with control.” Praise smart decision-making, smooth balance, and calm problem-solving more than speed. Highlight when students adapt well after a mistake or choose a more practical route.
Adaptations and Supports
-
Use fewer beam sections and fewer lasers.
-
Allow students to practice walking the beam first before adding obstacles.
-
Permit a spotter, hand support, or nearby support surface.
-
Keep obstacle heights predictable for students who need more consistency.
-
Give students a preview round where they walk alongside the beam and study the laser positions before attempting the crossing.
-
Maintain clear spacing around each lane so students can safely step off when needed.
- Use the lasers on the floor (no balance beam) for students with differing mobility.
Additional Considerations
-
Emphasize that control is more important than speed.
-
Remind Laser Technicians to hold their lasers still and fairly once a turn begins.
-
Keep pool noodles perpendicular to the beam and roughly parallel to the ground unless a variation is intentional.
-
Encourage the Traverser to think ahead before committing to a step.
-
Normalize stepping off as a safe reset, not a failure.
Equipment
6 Precision Sticks™ per beam. Add more beams to scale for class size
