Parkour And Freerunning / Re: Parkour needs this. Let's make it happen

Interesting. I think I like the sound of this. Only thing is that the whistle/call might have to be universalized/standardized, and the signal could still be different from group to group. Maybe different groups would use their own individually different signals to gather their own members.

I'm just curious; have you composed/come up with your own PK whistle/call yet? If so, would it be possible for you to upload a video of it here for others to see/hear?

Movement / Re: Techniques in Parkour

I disagree slightly with the first post.

So if the moves just by themselves cannot be considered "Parkour", then what is it? What else could it possibly be called? And what is it that we beginners are doing?

Look, not everyone is just bursting with new ideas all the time. Some of us need a little more direction than just that, especially complete beginners. If practicing each individual PK move in the hopes to gain eventual mastery over them isn't "Parkour", then what are we doing? How would you suggest we train?

Not to mention we wouldn't be nearly that ready yet to just be coasting through an environment. The seasoned practitioner sees it as a playground, a canvas to try different media, a cooking pot to try different ingredients. But to the new person, it's just another way to get hurt.

One more caveat. I've noticed that the beginning of this thread is getting to be a full decade old and counting. I'm sure times and views must have since changed at least a little bit in those nearly 10+ years.

New Jersey / Re: North Jersey (Bergen County)

(Hmmm, some parts of this forum are almost a ghost town. New posts are often months apart.)

Hi there! Name's Janus. I'm based in Bergenfield of Bergen county. I just got more interested in Parkour this month, and am rather desperately looking for a PK-interested group near my area. I unfortunately have no background in any physical discipline whatsoever (long story). I don't necessarily hope to become a superstar in the PK community or anything like that, but this time, I just want to get to a decent level that I can personally feel proud of in something that I decided to take up.

I have found at least one decent very beginner's PK tutorial hosted by the Tapp Brothers, but it remains very difficult to train completely by yourself, especially with no instructor or group showing you what you are doing right or wrong, or to give you that extra encouragement.

I'm only about 20 minutes away from Overpeck County Park, but in extremes, I might make efforts to go out of Bergen county as a very last resort. But I'm glad to see here that there are some people in northeastern NJ who are also interested in PK. Now we just have to arrange a group and a meeting place to train and decided what to do from there.
