When I was 11 years old I went to jump off the top of a one-story building over a paved path onto the grass across from it. It had been raining earlier, and there was an enameled tabletop laying on the roof in front of me which is where I was jumping from. I had performed that jump many times, and didn't take into account that the enameled tabletop would be as slippery as ice due to the rain. When I launched from it, both of my feet slipped out from under me and I did a belly smacker, landing spread-eagled on the pavement below. It was about a 10 foot drop plus the extra foot or two I got on the launch. I busted my lips and chipped my front teeth on the pavement and also broke my right wrist.

I took a nail file and filed my teeth smooth, and I had to wear a splint on my wrist for the next six weeks.

Moral of the story: Be careful when jumping from slippery wet surfaces.

I was also born with a "club" foot. I would never have known it if my mother hadn't told me. Apparently, I wore a cast on my leg for the first six months of my life to correct it. Growing up, I was EXTREMELY active. Alot of climbing, jumping, running, skateboarding, acrobatics, etc. I didn't even know which of my feet was the one that was "clubbed".

My mother used to tell me that the doctors said when I got older, it might come back a little. When I was in my mid-twenties, I noticed while walking towards a huge wall mounted mirror that my right foot would would turn slightly outward with each step, which makes my stride look slightly awkward. I guess I had been doing that my whole life and didn't even realize it.

It never really slowed me down much because I was awarded a medal in school for being the best overall athlete, and took home blue ribbons for sprinting, long jump, and some other field & track activities.

Recently when I went to see a podiatrist, and he was amazed at how high my arches were and asked me if I was a runner. He then told me my right arch was slightly lower than my left arch and tried to convince me to get a custom insert for my right shoe. I can't see what he is talking about, and I'm not sure if I even believe him. He asked me sit down and extend both legs, and after taking a look, he told me my right leg was shorter than my left leg.

I declined the inserts, figuring I had adapted to my situation pretty well, and that my body managed to compensate for any differences. I'm 33 years old now, so I doubt it will ever really be a problem even if that podiatrist was right. I just leave my body to find it's own way to correct itself. I don't care if my foot turns out a little when I run or walk.

By the way, did you know that Bruce Lee had one leg that was noticeably shorter than the other!

I posted this on a different topic earlier today. It is relevant to what you are ranting about:

I'm thinking that if you take your time and get into excellent physical condition, alot of those problems with wrists, backs, ankles, etc. may actually improve or even go away altogether. I believe parkour could have long-term positive effects on your health, both physical and mental. For example, it has been scientifically established that weight lifting increases bone density, so what about getting your entire body gradually into peak physical condition? Parkour requires all of your muscles and tendons to be built up by regular exercise until they are strong and elastic, and also trains you how to become highly aware of how to redirect your inertia and velocity so that it becomes a tool to make your movements easier, rather than having all of that energy jarred into your joints in a destructive manner. Once mastered, that skill can be applied to virtually any physically demanding activities you encounter.

Another thing to consider is that fact that your body is going to gradually change with training. You need to supply your body with the proper nutritional requirements to satisfy the needs of your newly developing muscular stamina. You will need those nutrients in order for body to repair itself after stress. Make sure the right materials are there to rebuild any weak foundations. Basically, eat enough protein and fresh vegetables, take your vitamins, and drink lots of water to flush toxins out of your body that can lead to fatigue and/or pain.

My wife was born in Nairobi, so I got mad family there that I have never met yet. I'm currently living in Columbus, Ohio, but eventually I have to make my way to Nairobi to meet my in-laws. They all live in an area called California, if you're familiar with it. I hope by the time I make it there, you have gotten Parkour established in the city. That would be cool.

There are alot of indoor basketball courts in Columbus. Some of those are open to the public I think. If we could find one that had some mats, that would be great. Also, some schools may have something. I had started some gymnastics training with these Hatians guys in Chicago one time. They were teaching little kids at some elementary school during after school hours and on the weekends. I joined right in. I was kinda funny because I was in a gym full of little kids between ages 5 and 10, and they were blowing me away with all these amazing somersaults and backflips. Some of those kids had mad skills. There were all kinds of mats and equipment there, and it was free.
