I would state that any need for a Juvi-board would come from the necessity of advising the younger generations of Traucers proper conditioning, stretching techniques, etc, BUT since that information is already available all across the board, it's not really that necessary for your age bracket.

The reason why there is Gorilla, and 30+ is because there is a fundamental change in how we (I'm a gorilla) approach certain aspects.  Gorilla's sometimes have to modify Kong vaults because of our size (weight, or even just LOOOONG legs), and the 30+ might have to put more emphasis on conditioning their rolls and landing because of how delicate their joints are becoming, or even figure out how to remove drops and landings completely, like sliding down the side of a building instead of just dropping down.

Taking into account what you, JesterPT, and Kyle have said, I think you would be fine with occasionally skipping lunch.

You're aware of your diet, you haven't been feeling weaker when you DO skip lunch, and as long as you are meeting certain caloric-intake amounts, and your fairly regular with how and what you eat...WHICH your body has become accustomed to, then I think you aren't in any danger by skipping lunch.

If you do start to feel weaker, consider writing out your daily meals, figuring out what vitamins, minerals, etc might be missing and supplement them with small snacks, or supplement pills.

Hey! Thanks for checking up on me.  Right now, I'm in a rut.  I'm not that motivated and everything.  So I have decided to train with my friend and see where we go from there.  I'm struggling with the fitness level and whatnot.

Don't be too worried about being in a rut at this point.  Everyone has a point with new hobbies, activities, regiments, etc, where we want to just go "F*@! It", that's why there are THOUSANDS of unused gym memberships starting the week after New Years.  "I'll get in shape...I'll eat a cake instead...".

Try to find something within the subset of Parkour/freerunning that you haven't tried, or maybe to focus on, like keeping a weekly video blog of your progress to also encourage others.

Yep, been looking for a while as well.

 There's the NIU Gymnastics and Parkour club that has a fee of $100 per semester to use their gymnasium at Energym in Sycamore, but I don't have $100 to throw around at the moment.

Here's a quick list of things you should look into before approaching the administration:

- Talk to the Track/field coach about being a faculty adviser....They could also help recruit track runners into the PK community, giving you a sizable roster to give to the school board.
- Establish a detailed plan of where and when you'll be training, and mention safety precautions you can set up.
- Get a hold of club leaders from http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php/board,228.0.html and ask them about any paperwork they handed in during the establishing of their clubs.

I didn't see it mentioned but maybe lead a discussion for helping students develop an at-home workout or obstacles.

At-home workouts and obstacles are important if some of them can't make it to practice everyday, or if training sessions aren't held over the winter.

I mean, in your opinion, if a person trains hard, even if he spend 18 hours on PC, can become a traceur/freerunner?

Definitely.  There's more than 18 hours in a day to train ;)

I know how you might feel.  I'm working for a degree in English/Japanese and between the constant reading and online research I have to do, it can be hard to imagine not having the time for parkour.

A couple of suggestions that I've found are helping me:
  • Take vitamins for the body and Neurotropics for the brain
  It helps not only for keeping alert and ready for parkour, but also class
  • If you cant do parkour for a day or two, then make up exercises you can do when you have a minute (squats, lunge thrusts, etc)
  • Sink into and hold squats if you're at your computer desk gaming or something

Got to run for now, more suggestions when I get a chance.

Once the website is back up, go to ChicagoParkour.com     there's information about Stego jams/sessions every couple weekends in Chicago, as well as the location of Parkour gyms, and various groups in certain cities.

There's a group of younger guys in the Yorkville/Morris/Joliet/Plainfield area that meet up every so often and have a FB called "Traucers of Will County" if you're interested in possibly running with them.

My bag from the Computer backpacks section has lasted since August 2006, not just for classes, hauling laptops and books, but I also took it with me on my 3 month trip to Japan where I hiked Mount Fuji, Fushimi Inari, etc.

While it's important to check and maintain surroundings, there's always going to be a margin of error and a bit of chaos.  This is why moves like Turn-vaults are so important.

Just because you know the area today, doesn't mean a it won't change tomorrow...construction crews move-in, too much litter, anything that could be hazardous can just happen in a second.

Besides, you can establish a couple routes while doing PK to an extent.  If you've never been to the area, you can still attempt a few moves as you prep. a route map in your head before you throw anything that needs to be checked out extensively.

While the statement could have been worded better, there are things to consider, and that's liability of the sponsors/coordinators: WFPF, Redbull and of course MTV, home of Jackass.  Also, is there anyone out there that hears: "do not try at home" and then decides to never attempt that sport or activity, and then goes through litigation to have the activity made illegal to prevent others from trying at home?

Since everyone seems to be so lawyer happy these days, there has to be some modicum of a disclaimer.  Besides, starting in your backyard might not be best for every practitioner.   If it is a WFPF event, they would have information on getting started, websites, what a suitable training location would be, any special facilities for PK training like Tempest's Academy, etc.  And if not, then the people running WFPF don't care about the sport, if they cant xerox a few info packets but can organize massive multi-day events that cost thousands of dollars.

For the TL;DR: People driving out to these massive events are probably going to ignore the "do not try at home" statement, or at the very least, look into the sport before running face first into the edge of a picnic table.

Next time someone approaches you and says you're showing off, do I what i do:  Throw your arms above your head and howl like a gorilla as close to their face as you can get.

That always works for me when it comes to gawkers, guys at the mall selling cellphone plans, or people complaining about doing parkour in public places.  I sometimes run away or past them for good measure...just incase the "fight or flight" reflex kicks in and they go to fight.

Movement / Hanging grip questions

    I have a few questions about hanging grips, when it comes to hand and finger positioning; mainly with a hanging grip coming out of a precision jump, to grab a ledge you couldn't make leading into a muscle up...

    I've watched as many clips as I can to study certain aspects of it, and notice that it is best to try to keep hands roughly shoulder width apart, if not a few inches wider depending on how wide your hips are...

    Here's the questions: Should the thumb be pressed against the flat of the wall (facing your chest) with the fingers over the ledge, and why (does it improve the grip)?

    Should I use my feet to not only provide stability by pushing up and a little bit away from the wall, but also as well as a way of keeping my forearms and knees from jamming into the wall?

    Can you recommend good exercises to improve grip strength aside from hanging from ledges

    If anyone could also post pictures of hand positioning, it might be helpful for others starting out with these new techniques.

For the TL;DR,  Legal responsibility:  None

Because you are on public property and you and the participants have had full disclosure of the risks involved in this activity, there is no liability to which you can be held, in the event of an accident...UNLESS, you intentionally cause it, i.e. round-house kick a newb in the face as he/she comes out of a roll.


If you are really worried, i suggest the following:

1)  Go to a local university and speak to the Student's Legal Assistance Office (SLAO) for full confirmation based on the laws in your state.
2)  Draft a waiver using some basic guidelines found here: http://athleticbusiness.com/articles/article.aspx?articleid=3370&zoneid=30    after that, have all participants sign and date 2 copies, 1 for them, 1 for you.   Maybe even have the SLAO review the waiver just to make sure.

Same here.  I'm out of NIU for the summer and bored as hell.

I'm not from Naperville, but I'm out in that area for a nice chunk of the week.  I'm a pretty big newb, but working on changing that.  I'm almost always free to train Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from about 3pm to whenever, and some late Saturday nights (after dark), plus Sunday mornings.

Movement / Re: pain free roll on concrete?

I recommend a few things:

1)  Try doing rolls on concrete from a stationary standing position, with no drops, then build up to 1', 3' 4' 5' etc.

2)  Get a gadget holster like this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/bags/918a/  and sew some padding on the shoulder areas, see if that helps.  Then start to slowly reduce the amount of pads.

Practiced vertical and standing long jump, as well as trying out/reviewing a few different products that claim to improve jump height.  Basically runs tension bands from your ankles to your hips.

Probably post findings in Consumer Whores in a week or so after thorough testing.
