Lehigh Valley Parkour is proud to announce an exciting new Parkour and Freerunning Seminar in July, along with a budding partnership with Lehigh Valley Sports Academy.

LVSA is a great facility designed for active-minded people. They are a gymnastics facility with a huge training area and lots of great equipment, plus another story of gym equipment, workout rooms, dance rooms, and more.

LVSA will be hosting a Freerunning and Parkour seminar on July 28th, 2012. Here are the details you need to know:

At this seminar, skills that are very difficult to learn outside on the concrete will be taught. Flips, twists, rolls, jumps, leaps, vaults and spins will make your day full of action and fun. Not to mention a great workout. All of these skills are developed in a fun and safe environment with foam pits, trampolines, bounce-tracks, balance beams, vault boxes, uneven bars, and plenty of padding.

Don't miss this opportunity to either learn the art of Parkour and Freerunning, or if you're already training, further your abilities and experience of the movements.

I'm just not sure this qualifies as a tutorial, mate. That's the problem. A tutorial is something a person who really understands how to break down and communicate a movement creates in order to pass on that knowledge. I think it's great you want to make one, but as was said before, take some time to plan and rehearse the tutorial. Figure out what you struggled with when learning the roll and figure out solutions for your audience. Plan what to say so you sound confident. If you're getting distracted and your voice is cracking and so on, your audience probably won't accept your authority.

Also, make sure what you're teaching is correct! I saw a lot of issues with your roll, not to mention the pain on the last roll, which proves something was wrong. Passing on incorrect knowledge over the internet is not something you can ever fix, to make sure you're helping more than hurting!

Aesthetics are a sign of mastery. All you can do is work towards perfecting your movements, and your own personal aesthetics will arise. You'll never move like Ilabaca or Vigroux, because that's not your body type. But you will develop very good aesthetics as a part of your regular training according to your body. Just strive for perfect control, silence, and concentration with your movements. Relaxation and letting go of your body will play a big role, but those things don't come until you're comfortable. Which takes time.

So your answer, there's no instant solution! Be patient, keep training. :)

Your back is pretty big. Are you talking about your spine? And in the middle? There's three different areas of your spine, known as the thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, and cervical vertebrae. Whether it's your thoracic or lumbar 'area' makes a difference.

I haven't looked over the video yet, but I was practicing a couple minutes ago and I'm pushing off my left foot now and it does feel a lot better and more natural. But when I try to exit on my left leg, it doesn't feel natural. I can do it, but it doesn't feel natural and I almost fall over at the end when I'm trying to get up because I land at an angle. I'll look at your video and troubleshoot it in a bit, I'm tired now :P

Obviously any kind of change of your muscle memory is going to feel weird at first. Seeing it in the video will help you visualize it and see the end product a little better.

There's a lot of good things about your roll, and a lot of things to fix. I'll do my best to be clear and concise. Keep in mind, rolls take a long time to perfect. Sometimes you solve one issue to find another, as you found with your shoulder pain into hip pain, thing. You have to go through a chain of problem solving, often, before it's nice and comfortable.

Okay, positive first. One of the biggest struggles people have when learning the roll is holding their circular structure. They let their back collapse and they don't have a smooth roll. You have a very goos, smooth, circular roll, and that's one of those things that you really need but is really hard to correct. So well done there.
Also, the use of your hands is very nice. You do a great job of absorbing and lowering onto that shoulder. The location you lower onto will dictate where that shoulder discomfort is.
Finally, I like that you're actually training them. Most people do one roll and go "I can't do iitttt". Rolling takes a lot of trial and error and practice, so I'm glad to see a video of lots of rolls, not just one or two. Shows how you practice.

Okay, onto what to fix.

First is your push. What you're doing, probably unconsciously because of the smaller space you're practicing in, is you're pushing up, then coming down into your roll. So when your legs make that initial push off the ground, your hips are rising and your head is already diving down. This isn't what you want to do. You want to be pushing out, forward, so your legs are completely straight. If I were to freeze it from a side angle, I should see your legs at only a slight upward angle, completely straight, then your waist bent over, beginning the roll. You need a forward push. Cover more ground in your roll.

Connected to that first issue is the second. What I told you to do in your push will be a lot easier if you push off the side you're rolling onto. So I see you roll on your left side. Try pushing off your left foot, not your right foot. That might solve not only your push, but also how forward and over your spine your roll is.

Lastly is your exit, or how you're standing up. You have one of those rolls where your feet are switched. I describe this foot position in my advanced roll tutorial, which you can find all over the "Roll Pain" thread. The problem is, you're rolling on your left shoulder, tucking your left leg in, and leaving your right leg out infront of you. That means both legs are infront of you, and neither are completely underneath you to push you up onto your feet. That's why you need your right hand to stand up at the end of every roll. Try switching your feet, and tucking your right leg in, and your left leg out. That way you roll straight from your hip to the ball of your foot, and you can smoothly transition into being on your feet.

My understanding is that "Kick the Moon" is a J-Step gainer with a flare, meaning you don't tuck. In the J-step gainer, you tuck the body in for the rotation. When kicking the moon, you swing. Like the difference between an arial and a sideflip. But that's just my understanding. Could be totally wrong!

actually they are amazing Ive tried every kind of shoe i could find like 80$ asics all the way to skate shoes and, for me, they work the best but its your call, everybody is different, thus why i love PK

Work the best in terms of what? Because speaking from the perspective of body mechanics and physics, they'd stop your foot from doing everything it's supposed to.

My vote is for Feiyues. In chna town in dc they call them Fay-ways/fee-ways the pronunciation is half ways in between the two options for e first syllable with fee-way being slightly closer

That's probably correct, but in America, we generally say "Fay-yous". So it only seems right, following the traditional American values of completely mutilating all aspects of language, to continue calling them Fay-yous.

yeah i like mine cuz they are flat soled, lol they do look cool but functionality over looks hahaha

I personally suggest you look into new shoes. Flexibility is a very important aspect for parkour shoes, as well as was mentioned before, a sole that isn't too thick. Not to rain on your parade, but your work shoes look absolutely awful for Parkour. Very unhealthy for your ankles and knees. Grip is really not a big deal. Don't buy them just because they say "no slip". All the shoes that are being discussed on this board are "no slip".

As for the actual topic, I train in both Feiyues and Tigers, and I can say they both rock. Tigers look a touch sexier and give a little more support, and the Feiyues are fabulously cheap and are really, really comfortable. Your call!

Did I ever say anything about committing crime? I just like to run away from police officers after making eye contact with them. It's a fun hobby.

Yes, actually. Because evading an officer on foot is a crime. A class "A" misdemeanor, to be exact. [Penal Code Section 12.21, punishable by up to a year in jail or $4,000] Even before they arrest you. Merely under suspicion. And beyond that, it's also kina stupid.

Thanks, bro. I'll work a little harder now to try to help people to understand Parkour is a legitimate discipline that has respectful and mature individuals practicing it, who use the art for the betterment of themselves and others. I'll try not to mention you to avoid confusion.

The only thing that concerns me here more than our police offers learning bad body mechanics is the quickness of members of our community to be grateful for their misfortunate so that we could get away with crime in such an event. Really?

And to think, people wonder why Parkour struggles to become legitimized.
