See if there's an open gym because that's f#cking awesome.

Do parkour and practice flips in open gym because you're f#cking awesome.

You have to keep yourself interested. Don't just play around with the same old vaults. Find ways to make them cooler, invent variations or do things you've never seen before (even if they may have already been done).

Have fun with walls. Do a bunch of wall runs and embrace your inner nerd gamer-ness you may or may not have. Maybe there are two short walls next to each other and you could easily jump from one to the other. There are a thousand different ways from A to B, don't stick to some silly and overused method, have fun with it. You could even hurdle one and front flip over the other, I don't know. Just find ways to have fun and explore new possibilities because you're not going to get past that plateau if you have at least decent basics but don't start to push past new dangers and fears.

Clean all the nails from all the surfaces in all the world...or...change your shoes/do your best to dodge.  I'm not cleaning up all the nails, let me just say that.

That hasn't happened to me, but I know that the shoes make you feel really sensitive to the ground. You can feel tiny pebbles and rocks that you step on as if you weren't wearing shoes.

I don't think that's really much of a reason to wear really thick shoes though, unless the spot at which you're training has a bunch of those things on the ground.

For some reason, I knew this day would come, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon. I didn't even see it coming, I was just trying to fix my backflips today and near the end, I guess I actually missed my knee on the tuck. Although it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, got a mouthfull of grass though.

It depends, really. But I think it's best to be looking/spotting the whole time, meaning you spot during the cheat set-up so you have an idea of where you want the kick to go. Then you spot again once you jump and spin around.

Think of how you do a cat leap or a precision jump onto, say, a wall or a rail. Before the jump you're staring at the spot on which you want to land, and during the jump you're going to stare at that same spot. You're not going to stare at your legs or the sky or anything like that when you jump, because you know you're in the air and you can't judge how far you're going to have to jump or how you're going to land if you're not focused on your intended destination.

SPOT YOUR TARGET!!

It does a load of magical things when you keep your eyes focused on something the whole time. Try to look at something ahead of you the whole time and as long as possible while you pivot until your body forces you to turn around. Then quickly look for the target again and kick it.

The reason you do this for spins or really any kicks is so that you don't lose your awareness, don't get dizzy, etc. Try spinning in a chair really fast and then close your eyes. I think you'll see what I mean.

It's so helpful with understanding how the cheat setup works and cleaning up the tornado kick. I can't really say much else about it because this guide says everything.

Your butterfly kicks are looking a lot better. Try to lift your chest up, but just not as much as you are right now. I try to lift it up but not to the point where my chest is diagonal to the ground. Also lift your back leg harder, and more up than to the side. I know you said you're not really that flexible but I'm sure you can get a lot more spread with your legs than that.

If you can manage to kick your legs a lot higher it would be fine to keep your chest there, it's just that it doesn't really look clean when your chest is a lot higher than your legs.

I was having problems with my b-kicks recently since I completely forgot how to do them, and when I focused on looking up and popping my chest up it made my back arch and they looked so much better. Didn't really keep my legs as straight as I should have, but my butterfly kicks looked like yours before I stopped staring at the ground the whole time.

For the most part I think they look pretty good, so it depends on whether you want to have them over-the-shoulder or vertical for the flip. But your j-step is fine. Really I think the only thing that would help you out is to focus on swinging your leg harder and straight. You'll get much more power out of it than if you just left it bent.

I find it helps to try to "skip" into the last couple steps. This is a good example of what I'm talking about, which is also the same thing as the power step or split-foot takeoff:

Also, I don't really think it's absolutely necessary to learn how to take off with the other leg. Just my opinion, but I don't really think there's ever a situation where one leg is injured/numb/other to the point that you have to rely on the other in a kong, because you still have to use both anyway. But it can be fun to learn it on both sides just for the experience, but I think for now since you're still trying to perfect the technique you should work on your good side.

Although it is easier to transition into a roll with more forward momentum you would not "have more downward momentum" to convert. The downward speed (and therefore momentum, because p = mv) only depends on the height. It does not matter how fast you're going horizontally; if you just drop 10 feet you'll have the same downward speed if you dropped ten feet going 50 miles/hour. Just clearing that up cause I whole lot of people seem to think like that. It is true, though, that forward momentum makes it easier to just fall into the roll.

I guess that's not really what I meant to say. You would have the same amount of downward speed either way, but with the horizontal momentum from the jump actually gives you a reason to roll, due to that "reverse blocking" idea by Levi Meeuwenberg. If you were to just fall straight down and roll from a cat, there's really no point because the roll won't absorb much of the landing, it would turn more into a "jump, land, squat, roll out" as opposed to "jump, land, spring into roll" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JoBLxFKkbM (2:25)

The problem with that, Tony, is you can't get as much speed the way you would jumping off from a run. You would have more downward momentum that you would have to convert into forward momentum from the roll because you're going at the ground more directly.

When I'm teaching someone about parkour who "wan'ts to know more" or even wants to get out and try it with me, I make sure they know every aspect of the discipline, and what it should/shouldn't be used for before I even have them attempt 1 small obstacle. It's boring for them, I'm sure, but If they can get past the lecture and learn it the right way then they can train with me on a daily basis. It's the way I would have wanted to start out, and its how I would want other to start as well.


That's exactly what I would do. Before they even learn anything, they should know the philosophy about it, why we do it, and how we train so they don't think this is some criminal escape training.
