CO Jams / CU Boulder Gauntlet Night (Fall 2009) - Thursday 5PM
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:08:31 PM »
-edit- Changed time to 5PM as noone could come at 4!
What: Gauntlet Nights
When: Every Thursday at 5 PM
Where: Meet at the CU Engineering Center courtyard directly adjacent to Regent Drive.

In an effort to improve mine and other traceurs fitness level, I'm going to resurrect the CU gauntlet night. For those of you who don't know what a Gauntlet is, read here: http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/1130/2/.

The parkour community as a whole is greatly unprepared from a physical fitness standpoint, and we all need to get out and work harder to become strong enough to endure the stresses that parkour puts on our bodies.

I strongly encourage everyone to attend these Gauntlets if they can. Or start up your own Gauntlet night in your area.

I hope that people will join me in these greatly beneficial and fun workouts.

PS: Thanks to Ryan for the gauntlet and the plagiarized post!

In the Media / New 5.10 Ad...
« on: December 21, 2007, 08:11:38 AM »
Just got my shiny copy of this month's Alpinist (Best..climbing mag..ever...) and on the back cover is a new (I haven't seen it yet) 5.10 ad.

It's got a "free" theme (freeclimbing, freefall, freeride, freesolo) and smack dab in the center of the page is "Freerun"

Pretty pretty :)

Anyone know who the athlete is? Jason@fiveten?

Also, did a real quick search on the 5.10 site but didn't see the ad I was looking for (But did see some old favorites up there!) :D

Socialize / Team Fortress 2 anyone?
« on: November 28, 2007, 08:31:42 AM »
So, it's gotten to be the time of year where it's dark when I go to work...and dark when I come home  ::)

Effing winter....

So what that means is more time for video games!

My brother and I generally get a game night going every Tues or Wed night...we are totally hooked on Team Fortress 2 for the PC.

Anyone out there play? What's your favorite class? Would you be interested if we started an APK group on Steam for TF2 nights?

Personally, I am best with the Soldier, or with heavy weapons guy with my brother as medic, or engineer on defensive levels.

Colorado / Boulder "castle" playground off limits now
« on: November 03, 2007, 04:12:32 PM »
 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

One of the teachers saw us today and called the headmaster who called the police today.
The cops were really nice and left once they talked to Demon and saw we weren't doing anything wrong.
However, due to liabilities and it being private property, the headmaster came back and made it very plain that we were not welcome back and that the authorities would be called and charges pressed next time.

It was a big bummer for me (I LOVE playing there) and I will craft a letter, as one teacher to another, to see if we can;t get some sort of dispensation to go back...but for now I think it's best to steer clear. They were so ticked off that they were taking pictures of people's license plates and threatening legal action.

It's really too bad, but it is private property and in our sue-happy society these days, folks have to cover their butts.

I'll take the location off the hotspot map for now.
Bummer  :-\ :'(

Training Journals / Grasshopper's training journal

10/16/07
Greetings!  I'm a newcomer to Parkour (joining the handful of dedicated females).  I love the exercise it provides, keeping me in shape.  I am part of the Colorado contingent and I attend the classes at Boulder Crossfit and participate in the Gauntlet at CU most Mondays.  I am just starting to keep track of my training/workout sessions and I guess this is the place to do it.

Today I:
    - jogged 1/4 mile to warm up
    - did 4 reps of 10 push-ups
    - did 4 reps of 10 sit-ups
    - did 2 reps of 20 squats
    - did 20 pull-ups (5 in a row; body weight - personal best!)

Colorado / Your Birthday Challenge
« on: October 08, 2007, 07:28:43 AM »
So I had these big plans I was going to ask you guys for on my birthday (last Wednesday; I turned 32!)

My plan was going to be this all-day jam with people coming and going as they had time with me trying to keep up/keep out for the whole day.

I was also going to try to complete various challenges (100 pushups, pullups, etc) during the day.

Unfortunately, the whole plan got kiboshed because I had to go out on yet another school trip instead.
The motivation to fully flesh out the day kinda fizzled after four days of being with kids :)

BUT, I still think the idea of a birthday challenge is a good one and would like to support anyone else who wants to do it. There's even some inspirational websites out there to stoke the ideas. (Andy will appreciate some of the climber's birthday challenges.)

SO, I'm going to start brainstorming my birthday challenge all over again and I'll post my ideas here...

What would your birthday challenge be?
When is your birthday?
What kind of support would you need to complete your birthday challenge?

Finally, remember that you should be training your best every day....
This would be just a special day of hell to celebrate the fantastic day you were born  ;)

CO Jams / Friday B.O.S.S Jams: Downtown Denver, Cat Fountain, 5PM
« on: September 03, 2007, 12:06:38 PM »
No no...Bruce Springsteen won't be there, nor will I be hanging around in my jeans jacket slinging 80's slang....

B.O.S.S.= Blow Off Some (frickin') Steam

Since my work schedule has been conflicting with EVERY jam scheduled so far,  :'( I figured I would throw out a time that I could actually make and hope it would work for others as well:

SO: To celebrate the end of the work week, I will be heading down to Cat Fountain and jamming Friday Evenings at 5PM.

Come one and all and blow off some steam from the work/school week.  ;D
Depending on who shows up, we can hit up either Jamba or a local bar afterwards and unwind.

Peas,
Monkey

Socialize / Need help with adding an avatar
« on: August 21, 2007, 10:59:31 PM »
Heyas...

I posted this in the info board...but it seems no one is reading..except aperion..and he has the same problem ;)

I cannot add an avatar  :'(

I have tried everything I could, shrunk the image to about 1" square....tried gif and jpeg..to no avail.

Could someone tell me the parameters (size, both physical and disk space and format) that an avatar needs to be to get on your profile.

I feel like this should be such an easy thing...but it has me completely baffled  :-\

Thanks tons in advance

OK, I have looked and tried on my own (a lot) but I can't get this to work!!

I have tried both uploading from my computer...and linking from Picasa Web Albums but nothing comes up.....

I'm sure this is some simple thing...but it has me baffled. Is it a size thing??format??

What am I doing wrong???  :-[

Or, better yet...what can I do right to make it work?

Thanks!

Pics & Vids / National Jam "Flip Wave" Video
« on: August 14, 2007, 06:19:21 AM »
Well, since my foot is all bruised up from this weekend, I had time to look through the footage I got on Saturday. Unfortunately, most of it is close-ups of me doing various things. (That's what you get when you ask your parents to hold the camera...)  ::)

But I did get a pretty sweet angle on the flip wave!

Check it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmZNBUp5-jE

Be gentle..it's my first try at video editing..so it's pretty crude.

Enjoy,

CO Jams / Heading down to CU (Fridays)
« on: August 03, 2007, 11:37:36 AM »
Hey guys...last minute post here...I am going to head down to CU at 4:30 today...with the intention of exploring and trying out a continuous run (instead of staying in one spot to try stuff). If anyone is interested in joining in on the fun, I'll be at the engineering center at 4:30.

Probably warm up there for @ 10-15 mins and then head off.

Cheers

Colorado / COPK National Jam Lodging: Visiting Traceurs check here!!
« on: July 11, 2007, 10:56:13 PM »
Hey guys (and gals)!

I have volunteered to try and coordinate the lodging for all the out-of-town traceurs coming in for the national jam in August.
We are expecting something close to 100 people descending on our lovely Parkour heaven and we need someplace to keep them all at the end of the day. (Wandering the streets is not really a viable option...)

Unfortunately, despite best efforts, the whole camping thing has fallen through (There seems to be a big concert at Red Rocks the same weekend and we can't get the group camping we wanted).  >:(

Most likely, we will end up having most everyone stay at a local hostel. This will make it easier to arrange carpools to the various jams..and keep the cost down for our out of town brethren (and sisteren...en)

Keep an eye on this post...I will be posting info on hostels I have contacted...as well as links to local public transport...nearby Chipotles (yummy burritos and the preferred fuel for many of the local traceurs), where to get bee-sodas, and whatever else I can think of that a visiting traceur might need.

I will post all the info here and on the COPK hotspot map.

Cheers and thanks for hanging in there folks!! It's going to be Brilliant!

Pics & Vids / Video Editing and Post-production...
« on: June 01, 2007, 11:09:04 AM »
This seemed like a good place to post this question...and I haven't seen much previous discussion on Parkour video editing beyond the article on APK: http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/329/236/

The videos I've seen posted here...some are awesome and some are...not so awesome. I know that what makes a lot of good videos great is skillful editing and other post-production work.

SO ...I would like to start working with some footage I've taken but Windows Movie Maker just won't cut it anymore...

I wanted to put the question out there for all you veteran videographers...

What video editor or editing suite do you use? What do you like about it? What do wish it had that you can't do? How is the interface and how steep is the learning curve?

What effects and filters you find most useful?

Any good tips and tricks that you use that you would like to share?

Thanks in advance for helping me and other neophyte vidographers along!!

Colorado / Jim is Sad :( ...Jim is mad >:(
« on: April 29, 2007, 06:00:54 PM »
So, flushed with good feelings after the fitness tests this week, I got in my car and started heading home...visions of next week's obstacle course drifting through my head when....
<insert stream of vicious curses here>

I remembered we will be back on the east coast next weekend for a wedding.

BAH!!  >:( :( So much for my perfect attendance record  ::)

Alas...Well..as consolation, I know that school is out for summer soon, which frees up more time to get to the weekly jams. And classes will be starting up again.

Ah well, at least I'll be going to a good party  ;)

Good luck to all my classmates next week..have fun, train/play hard..and I'll see you in two weeks!

Cheers
Jim

Good luck on the course this weekend
