FL Jams / Miami CommUNITY Jam 2011 (May 27-30)
« on: April 27, 2011, 11:53:03 AM »
I saw this on facebook but here is the link to the page http://miamicommunityjam.com/

The Miami CommUNITY Jam will be taking place Memorial Day weekend, May 27th - 30th, 2011. Join the Parkour and Freerunning communities of South Florida in our first annual jam! We will be visiting locations all over Miami, with activities for Traceurs and their families.

The CommUNITY Jam is an annual parkour and freerunning event taking place Memorial Day weekend, May 27th - 30th. Here in Miami we believe in building our communities to unite them through team work and cooperation. The three major Parkour and Freerunning groups of Miami decided to host a jam for our fellow traceurs and friends from all over the world in order to strengthen our commUNITY.

A jam is a way Traceurs expand, learn, and share what we do while including everyone despite their differences in culture, background, and borders. We come together through sharing a common discipline, one that asks us to know who we are and better ourselves through training.

We are very excited about this event and hope to see everyone there.

Parkour And Freerunning / Seeing The Big Picture
« on: April 26, 2011, 01:37:18 PM »
I noticed something about a lot of traceurs, including myself, that is holding a lot of us back. I'll try to explain it with an example in my life:

For the past few months I have been struggling with throwing twists into my movements. I thought I just wasn't good at it and I wouldn't be because I had tried again and again to figure out what was slowing my rotations in air and could't fix it. I noticed my foot didn't turn like my friends did when i took off and tried to change that to see if it would get me to get a 360 into my backflip. But it didn't. So I stopped trying to get twists down and just focused more on other movements. But recently I figured out what I was doing wrong.

It wasn't that I had a small error in my form that could be fixed, but it was an error in the way I was thinking about the movement itself. I had been focusing on small movements and hadn't been thinking about the bigger picture itself. I had been so caught up in trying to get my arms to do this and my right leg to do that, that I hadn't been focusing on getting my whole body to spin in air. I went out to my trampoline about a week ago and thought to myself, forget the small things and just think about getting your whole body to twist. So when I went up and did the flip my body knew exactly what it needed to do. I had been so focused on the small things that I had lost sight of the big picture. And losing sight of the bigger picture will hold you back in everything you do, from a backflip 360 in freerunning, to getting good grades in school. We have to keep our eyes on the whole picture if we want to succeed in our efforts.
Just wanted to throw my $0.02 worth in hopes of helping out someone else.  :)

Hey, I've been a member of Urbanfreeflow.com for a while but it seems dead in my region of Florida (near lakeland) so I'm hoping to find some new people to train with here!
