That is good news.  I think the idea of doing open to public demonstrations is not only a great approach to spreading the notion of parkour, but a great way to bring in business.  Please keep us posted whenever you get a chance.  Congratulations on the success you have earned.

IF they are there for you instruction, then there needs to be a mutal respect.  They must follow your routines, your drills, your techniques, so they can hopefully glean a fraction of your skill.

IF this was just a jam session, your only establishing dominance to be the alpha male.

Hey don't hate on me. I was told by my mestre that schools were rare.
Capoeira was developed to defend slaves from the slave owners. It was disguised as a dance because people were not allowed to practice martial arts for the very  reason it was practiced.

AGAIN - feel free to say I'm wrong but what I'm saying is what Mestre Beto taught.
I am not hating on you, just correcting.  As for the origins a lot of groups have their dogma, but because it was so persecuted, very little is known for fact.  Most of the slaves were chained by their feet, how could they fight back?  That is one argument, I for one agree with what you and your Mestre believe.

I studied with Mestre Acordeon, and Mestre Ratto (Fortaleza Brazil).

Preface
I have been sick that last two weekends which has greatly  impacted my strength training on a negative level.  Fortunately I seem to not only be on the mend, but reinvigorated.  I have kept up with my typical Shotokan training, and have implemented some morning technique routines using my heavy bag, and of course lots of Kata.  Today was the first time in three weeks that I have made it to gymnastics.  Needless to say I had goals, and energy to burn.

Gymnastics
The floor was not packed with cheerleaders like the last time I went there.  This time there was only 5 or so of them, most of them still inconsiderate of all other sentient life form present however.  I started practicing my front tuck into the pad pit.  I was landing it most of the time, taking it easy just trying to get back into the swing of things.  After about ten attempts someone came a long wanting to share the pit with me, so of course I was more than happy to do so.  Then along comes a cheerleader and sets up a spring board and moves my extra pad (placed there to lessen the drop and make the pit level with the floor).  Instead of getting upset I moved onto the floor.  I started drilling the front tuck, but unfortunately to no avail.  There were some large improvements however.  Usually when I biffed the technique last time I would land on my tail bone or back.  This time I would land on my feet, unfortunately still in a tucked or semi-tucked position.  After I found my little niche (even though the cheerleaders soon took over the floor as well as the pit) I managed to attempt 27 front tucks in a little less than an hour.  Exactly 0 of these attempts were successful, but I came close a couple of times.  I suppose that is what I get for missing three sessions.

I plan to practice on my trampoline with as little bounce as possible.  Maybe I can try a few in the Dojo with our fall mat.  None the less I do feel I am getting more fluid with my form, still the technique feels fairly awkward.  Guess I will just have to grind it out.  Maybe some footage will help me analyze the situation.

Fitness
My fitness is still rather sporadic, but I did work in some handstands, Assisted HSPU (2x5), full dips (2x5), L-Sits (3x10 seconds), Pseudo Push ups (2x30), Jack-knifes (2x15), and some sporadic amount of situps during Shotokan.
I plan to actually engage in my regular routine tomorrow, I do not have class which means more time.  Also my flexibility work has been increasing steadily.

I've been told that in brazil, it's rare you'll find a capoeira school. However, you'll find a Roda (pronounced Hoh-dah) just on the streets somewhere..

Sorry mate, bull shit.  There are tons of schools (Grupo) in Brazil. There are often Roda on the street, beach, or in a gym.  I found 3 different grupos located within 10 miles of my area when I travelled to Brazil, I also so a Roda at least every other day.

The traditional way of learning Capoeira was merely by being allowed to view a Roda and jump in when you had the courage.  That isn't how it owrks now.  You usally learn from an instrutor or professor/a and occasionally a mestre.

Capoeira is a Afro-Brazilian martial arts whose origins are a bit sketchy.  What is know is that it incorporated martial arts disquised in a dance.  This was based of a traditional African fighting art known as Batuque.  In Brazil the slaves were split up and mixed with different Africans from other areas, thus a new way of preserving their culture was born.  That is one theory, the other is that it was invinted purely for liberation (which did happen on a few occasions). This is deviating from the topic If you want a ton more information PM, or get a book on the stuff.

Maybe a moderator will open up a new forum area just for you.  I think this would be a brilliant idea.  Almost like a Yelp thing to help you find a group.

Try it out and make up your own mind.  As a former Capoeirista I found a lot of benefit to parkour from the Jogo, but that is becasue I knew how to apply it.  Practice it and see if it is useful, be careful though you might get hooked.  I started Judo just to learn how to fall... I have been practicing Judo for a year now onyl for the sake of Judo.

Talk to the campus, start a club, sign a waiver, etc.  Try to make it legit and no more worries.  Sometimes people just do not like other doing something they either do not understand, or (as it appears) are unable to do.

Preface
So far I stand as a mere novice in parkour.  I am able to do vaults, basic gaps, I can precision, but not onto rails yet, and other than a couple of flashy kicks and a Sketch front hand spring I have no acrobatic talents.  My flexibility is decent as I practice Shotokan Karate-Do and Judo.  I weigh 177.6 Lbs which is the lightest I have weighed in a long time.

As for basic strength I can knock out 57 Push ups in a minute, perform 12 consecutive proper form Pull ups, and I I have a fairly strong abdomen.  My legs are also powerful, and I can run a 7:45 mile, and run 3 miles last time I tried (1 year ago).  My main emphasis in Cardio is Sprinting however.

Parkour
Today I went for a 20 minute parkour run on my lunch break around 2 A.M.  I felt it was a fairly productive venture.  I was able to land a move I have been trying to get for a week now, a lazy vault over a rail (Sternum level) to precision on a parking block that is about 4 feet away.  Surprisingly I only failed once, after that I landed it each time I tried it (about 5 times).  I also did a lot of work on my precisions for gaps and dropping.

I did however realize that I need a lot of work on my wall runs.  This is a hit or miss movement for me.  I know I have poor foot placement for sure, but I can't shake the feeling that I am doing something else wrong, I just don't know exactly what it is yet.  I also need to make my cats tighter (keep my feet together when I leap).  As for my vaults they are pretty decent at this time, I do need to work on my placement.  I feel I put a little too much weight on my hands which slows me down and impedes my flow.  So far the only vault entirely eluding me is... the Kong/Monkey.

Fitness
L-sits (2x10 seconds X3), Assisted HSPU (3x5), Pseudo Push ups (3x20), Full Dips (3x5), Bent Frog Stand (6x10 seconds), and a little light dynamic movements with some 15 lbs dumb bells.

I have similar problems, one thing that helps me is to remember to keep a steady breathing pace.  This helps me from holding my breath as I perfome a movement, and jsut makes me feel (and consequentially look) more graceful.
Also as Mr. Fernandez do not overthink things.  You will enter three stages (in my experience) 1) not thinking enough 2) Overthinking and overanalyzing and 3) Flowing
To reach the 3rd stage requires constant practice until you reach all of the overthinking minute details in a technique, overcome them, and finally forget about them.  My advice is drills.

I noticed you had a variety of MA's at your school.  I was mainly offering it as a point to others intending to open a gym.

As for the credit I still think it is important to have a strong credit score and history (3+ years) if you want to start a business.  It may be like purchasing a house or a car where you need co-signers, but it is possible to get.

I was trying to use this awesome thread you started as a brainstorming point to raise important questions for the opening, running ,and preparation of both for a gym.  It is not something that can easily be undertaken.  You yourself have built an outstanding student base, trained a long time and I am sure prepared for this in several ways.  None-the-less how long did it take to actually start?

The big thing is preparation I think.  Build a good credit score, save for the opening and overhead costs, look for a location, establish contacts, learn proper training and partner with others to diversify your product.  You have done all of these and I just have to say great job and for once I wish I was in Minnesota :).

You could also consider subletting your space at certain hours for say a martial arts school (Especially TKD or Capoeira).  Maybe that would help curb the cost, and you would be keeping your business open more hours of the day, which is important.  This is a great post, and I am glad you are posting this whilst you are "in the thick of it all".  Maybe you could have a post-establishment post aswell?

Another thing to consider is personal finance.  When trying to get laons personal credit (FICO) is important right?
What about building certain things?  Like foam pits (if you want them), that would bring additional hastles such as construction and permits right?
Can you describe the flooring you are putting in too?  Is it a hard flooring, carpet, or tumble floor?

I overslept for my first jam in a long time.  Then found out I had some how deleted all of the numbers of the attendees, had to run around the area trying to find them.  Long story short I ran around CSU Chico's campus for 1 hr and 28 min and still did not meet any of them.

Then I had to go to work.  Yeah it sucked.
