I started training four and a half years ago when I was 28.  Parkour has taken me all over the country and through it I've met some of the coolest people I know.  You're not too old, you're not too big.  Parkour is for anyone willing to put in the work.  Get out there, meet people, ask for help, train hard, start small, and progress safely. 

You won't regret it.

Calluses are bad.  Calluses become blisters.  Small calluses are good, just make sure to manage them with a pumice stone to keep them small and moisturize daily to keep your skin soft. 

Also, rips hurt.  Deal with it.  I coach gymnastics and I watch little girls do giants on bleeding rips everyday.  I know we're not as tough as them, but let's try a little harder, eh?

Daily pumice in the shower, plus the occasional shaving with a straight razor, has worked well for me over the years.  When I get a rip, I have found that soaking it in a warm epsom salt bath seemed to speed up skin re-growth, some gymnastics coach recommended it somewhere online, but it's not necessary at all.  What does really help the healing process is to keep the rip moist like Dan said.  Chapstick and lip balm work great for that, they're easy to slip in your pocket and take with you and the help prevent the wound from drying and cracking.

You should work both of those: 1) with the belly facing the wall, start in push-up position and walk your feet up the wall 2) kick up in to a handstand with your belly facing away from the wall.  Additionally work on some of these drills, especially the one starting around 27s, you can ignore the lunge drills as they are more oriented towards gymnasts, but the "teeter totter" drill where you kick up almost into a handstand is very helpful:

As you do those, with control, you will get better at being upside down.  For a handstand make sure that you keep your arms straight, as they will be stronger in that position.  As you develop strength by working on the drills, you will eventually be able to hold a handstand without locking out your arms.

You don't need to be motivated to go out and train.  You just need to go out and train. 

Talk to any long-term practitioner of any pursuit and they will tell you that there were hundreds of times when they lacked motivation but they got out there and did it anyway.

You should see a physical therapist who can check out your personal medical history and evaluate your injury and prescribe exercises just for you. 

Take this opportunity to learn your lesson the first time.  All of us make mistakes with training, and anyone who trains long enough will most likely suffer an avoidable injury.  I've had tendonitis.  Rest is key, rest longer than you think you need to.  Good luck.

I think this thread should be moved to general fitness.  There are more knowledgeable people there, many of whom have relevant degrees and certifications.  Not that certs and degrees are everything, but that's the best place for the technical advice you're seeking.

Good luck man, this is going to be awesome!  I think you should document what you're doing from the beginning.  All of us would love to cheer you on as you go, and you could inspire others to change as well.  I used parkour as motivation to quit smoking, go back to school and get a degree, and generally become nicer and happier.  It's a powerful tool for transforming your life.

Hi everyone,
I used to smoke crack twice a day. I recently stoped but the cravings are rough.  :-[ I've heard from a friend that exercice could help to reduce them, so I tought about parkour. Watching these videos on YouTube gave me a lot of ideas, and I'd like to have your advice: where to start? where and with who to train?

Funny story though, I double leg on the opposite side I sideflip.  I sideflip right and twist left so side full works way better than dleg twist/full which is on my left side so I'd have to twist right which would be weird.

Anyone know of a tutorial or have any good tips on side fulls?  Just curious.

I could throw a video up, but I don't think I'm even at that point yet.  I started throwing 'em in the pit and they're both difficult and super damn fun.  People were telling me I need to kick out harder, but no one at my gym has landed them.  Once I start getting 'em better I'll progress 'em the usual ways: pit, mat in pit, matpile in pit, tumble track, mat on floor, etc.

I have a pair.  I've worn them for a month or so of training now.

They are the best running shoes I've ever had, and are extremely comfortable to wear everywhere.  Their incredibly lightness, flexibility, and ground feel make them my favorite pair of shoes for almost everything, except parkour.  The grip is disappointing.  Because of the flexibility I can overcome the grip for things like precisions, even rail precisions, but wall runs, tic tacs, and similar moves are difficult to impossible.

Sadly I have yet to find a minimalist shoe with decent to great grip.  So far my best option is to own a good minimalist shoe, 5.10 Daescents for gravity hacking huuuuuge walls for fun every now and then, and Tigers for the majority of training.  Long live Tigers.
