Title: Musical Careers?
Post by: Ethan Nicholson on May 21, 2011, 02:07:51 AM
Hey thar everyone, I haven't been here in a while. I made a connection while at school a few days ago that all of the traceurs I have met, (literally, all of them) have been in either a band or some sort of musical project at one point. I realize this thread was done like a year ago, but I can't find it to necro it so I figured I'd start a new topic.

So yeah. Any of you peoples play in bands, music projects, solo acts, or do anything musical with your life direction?

I actually used to play music for a living.  Now, I play for fun, but I guess that I'd say that I fit that stereotype.

When and what did you play in the band? It seems like it'd be hard to make a real living off music.

I played guitar for a rock band.  I play all sorts of instruments, but guitar is my first love.  Yes, it's hard to make a living as a club band.  We got on with some better known groups (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, 38 Special), but they were doing the whole "we're not too old yet" thing, while we were young and trying to get the music out.  It's not a comfortable life, and that's why I got a real job...or I simply got old too. :)

i can play any keyboard instrument, some guitar, some bass, drums, violin, and random percussion instruments. i have thought about music as a career but never really followed it at all.

I didn't necessarily play in a band or anything but I did play the violin. Played it for a few years, then stopped once I got into high school because I wanted to get more into art (Art, Photography, Graphic Communications, etc.).  I would love to have art as a career, among other things.

I have thought about music as a career though, because I rap (yeah I know people are going to be like 'ajdhfuagdfbaugf!!!' about it, oh well). *shrug*

I played the saxophone and the piano. I was really good at the piano before I stopped practicing. I probably could have gone to a music conservatory to study it. But alas, I didn't realize my talent until it was too late.

I sing... considered doing it professionally, but don't love it that much... i was a theatre major in college & pursue it when I can.

I play saxophone, drums, piano, and violin. But ultimately music is a pretty worthless career and I never cared for making it one.

I played in punk rock bands that never seemed to make it to the stage, often due to my former rock'n'roll lifestyle.  I played guitar and sang, but I can play the drums too, and a bit of piano.

I also danced in a modern dance company in '09-'10.  Did a local production of The Nutcracker too.  Hella rad.  Gave me a different perspective on both music and movement.

I played sax in middle and part of high school. But that was a long long time ago. Bought me a bass guitar when I was 18. Taught myself that pretty well cept I can't read notes. I sold that when I first got married to help make rent one month. Now I play the didgeridoo. Been playing bout a year now. Actually thinking bout busking round my city. Make a little side moneys.

Oh I got skills yo. ;)

At the moment I don't have anything, but I plan on getting a Bluebird Mic (http://www.bluemic.com/bluebird/). My new computer, which my cousin is sending me (he has his own studio and works for a professional studio in Las Vegas), will have Pro Tools and Reason 5 on it.

Ash.  Try a Blue (the brand name) "Snowball."  I've used them, and they're a simple USB condenser that does a fantastic job.  For vocals, if you don't have a sound-booth, they're great.

I second that. I've used the snowball mic for voiceovers and such for my short films and videos and it works perfectly

If you're willing to fork out some cash, apparently Shure sm57's have fantastic quality, and get used in professional recording. they cost $250-$600 though.

I had a simple Panasonic microphone, but I mic swung too hard and now it's broken. I've been looking for a new one ever since, but I don't want to get rid of it since it's the first microphone I ever had :/

That's a negative.  Shure 57s, 58s and 58 Betas suck for recording.  They're good dynamic mics, but don't work nearly as well as even the cheapest condenser mics for vocals.

Hey Ashy... this is a GREAT place T9 take the advice of Joe... he's a phenomenal musician & REALLY knows his stuff.  I can't begin to name off all the instruments we currently have in the house... we're getting ready to record a jazz album & I'm using a snowball... not only are they fantastic mics, they're also super cute & tiny.  Not to mention fairly inexpensive.

QFT.

Plus, the SM 57s used to be around $100... if I remember correctly.  Been awhile though.

Vocals.

And by vocals I mean screams, inhales, exhales, squeals, etc.

All day, every day.

I play saxophone, keyboard, clarinet, and at the moment I'm learning guitar and drums. I used to be in a band as the keyboard player and we managed to record three songs before our drummer moved. Music careers are pretty hard to get but heck might as well go for it..
