Title: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on September 19, 2009, 04:34:13 PM
This is the place for people on Maui to coordinate training.

SUN 9/20 - starting about noon [waiting for confirmation from Brian, JC, Duke, Levi or Shiloh]

Iao Valley - about 2 miles west of Wailuku - road ends in parking lot.

This is a nice muddy hike. The guava are probably still ripe. Maybe gingers in bloom? We'll hike into Iao [upstream] for a while on the paths, then rock-hop downstream.

Expect to get wet and muddy. Expect to fall in the water at least once.
We can scale this hike down if you've got friends/ family who want to come along but aren't into parkour.

Let me know if there's a better place to put this thread. I can move it around until we find the best place for it.
I had it in BOOT CAMP but because Oahu's so busy, you can't tell when something new has been posted. By having it here, you can instantly see "Oh, Maui Hotspots has something new. I wonder who's training?"

I was thinking of maybe even putting it in the main thread area - not as a sticky, tho.

Here's my best guess for the rest of the week's training.

TUE 22: 2:30 Kihei - HI. Walking, lifting, throwing, catching, hand strikes.
WED 23: 6 pm Kahului - KC. Rails, low walls, light PK
THU 24: 2:30 Kihei - HI.
FRI 25: 3 pm Maui Lu to Sugar Beach
SAT 26: GTG - no time for a regular workout

Special dates to remember:
NOV 19-22: Brian O from SFPK comes for bro's wedding - Probably an Iao Valley hike
JAN 21-25: HIpk National Jam on Oahu

Maui County Fair starts THU!

Here's my guess at this week's training:

MON: 2:30 Kihei - HI, KCC: Run as many of the MN tests as I can [All but rope?]. Class after.
TUE: 2:30 Kihei - HI: Finish tests or light training. Work after.
WED: 6 pm Kahului - KC. Light PK. If new shoes are non-marking, may amp up the level a bit. Church at 7:30.
THU: GTG - no time for regular workout [maybe]
FRI: Working at the fair KC food booth in evening. GTG?
SAT: Working at the fair in evening? I don't know when my wife signed us up.

SUN: 7:30 am Kahului - KC - play mass games with kids? I had a lot of fun playing capture the flag yesterday, but was a sweaty soggy mess after. It depends if I'm playing guitar or not. Not sure if we're helping at the fair. I hope not. I'd like to run the beach at least once.

GTG = Grease the gears = very small workouts spread throughout the day.
KC = King's Cathedral, 777 Mokulele, Kahului HI. Low walls, stairs, windows, planters, shipping containers, loose pipe and tires. Rails are ok for vaulting OVER, but don't trust them to land on - not designed for impact, and not bolted securely.
KCC = Kihei Community Center, 303 E Lipoa, Kihei HI - they have a nice pool, with a large clock. Some ok rails, low and 8' walls, planters, trees, grass, picnic tables.

Sorry I missed it. My training this month has been pretty minimal so far.

Here's my guess at this weeks training unless I take time off to train with Shiloh in the morning...
MON: 5 pm Kihei - short training. Class after.
TUE: GTG - working solid 7:30 am to 11 pm
WED: 6 pm Kahului - KC. Light PK. Church at 7:30
THU: 5 pm Kihei
FRI: 7 pm Kahului - KC. After guitar practice.
SAT: Either early before work, or late when it's dark and I'm tired.

SUN: Not Lahaina. Austin and Glenn haven't been in touch. So I'm looking open 12 - 5 or so.

Its all good you know how it goes man.

Im looking pretty full this week too.  Got a funeral and all that goes with it to tend too. Just kinda training when I have open time.
You asked how much in advance my dad gives me, he sometimes tells me weeks ahead, sometimes minutes. lol.  I don't have a set job myself right now so he likes to take advantage of this.  And I work at night wit my mom.

Your work looks CRAZY. That is long hours man.

So Sunday was suppose to be Lahaina? I think I might be able to come train with you if there isn't any more family stuff to attend.  Where ever you may be.

Here's my guess at this week's training:
HI = invaded - may want to train somewhere else? KCC?

SUN: 2:00 Wailea - Beach sprints, long jumps, flippy stuff [hah!] and swimming [or a long nap]

MON: 4:00 Kihei - HI: 500m, and some lifting? Class after.
TUE: 4:00 Kihei - HI: Sprints, hi and long jumps, climbing. Work D 5-10.
WED: 6 pm Kahului - KC. Light PK. Church at 7:30.
THU: 4:00 Kihei - HI: Sprints, QM, cats. Work D 5-11.
FRI: 6-7:30 Kahului - KC. Heavy pk. Maybe a night swim after?
SAT: Work D 11-6. Gotta try to work out before, because I'm wiped after. I just want to eat, and then it's dark.

SUN: not sure.

Geri's sick, so we won't be going to Kahului tonight. Maybe jump around the neighborhood after supper.

Ok. This is going to be a good week ;D

I -HAVE- to get out of work early every day this week. Like 2pm. So big time for work out ;D
MO: They moved class to TU night. Can't...
TU: Work2 at 5 pm
WE: Jump Kahului 6-7
TH: Work2 at 5pm
FR: XTERRA 5k course? Jump Kahului 6:30-7:30 if I have any energy left.
SA: Work schedule is messed up - how can I work 2 jobs in the morning?

SU: Open time in afternoon?
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on October 19, 2009, 04:36:54 PM
Looks like you have to have an official XTERRA number to get onto the practice course.
My question: Is the practice course just for biking, or running also? I don't want to be running, and have a bunch of elite bikers crest a hill at 30 mph and run me down. Part of the run is along Big Beach, around Puu Olai through the kiawe...

POST 1000.

This isn't working, yet. So...

Ryan F. HIpk and Brian O. SFPK are both coming to Maui Nov 19-22. Ryan will [probably] be in Kaanapali, and Brian in south Kihei. Brian's in town for his brother's wedding, but we've talked about hiking Iao. Ryan is coming with a couple friends who are not traceurs, and they're doing the tourist thing.

I'll be there, one way or another.
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: turtlekarma on October 27, 2009, 02:05:45 PM
Sheraton just informed me that they canceled my booking to make room for a wedding...in november, rediculous lol... but chances of me coming just got cut in half.  Honestly I've got way too much on my plate right now, dunno if I'd be in any shape for a trip in november anyway...cause the way my schedule is right now I'll have a major presentation to put together and a 15pg paper just for that weekend.  I think I'll be able to do it, but the trip might not be the stress reliever I wanted it to be.

But, I'm still hoping that something can be figured out soon though.  I think we'll just end up renting out a house for the weekend if we can't find anything else.

Hey me and a friend of mine have been trying to find a parkour community in maui for awhile and i kinda just stumbled on to this site. We're just amature traceurs but have been trying to find some people to train with and learn from, so if your still doing that training thing let me know just send me a message or email me. Thanks

Hi Nate! Glad you found us. Where you stay?

Shiloh and I are still training. Shiloh's in Wailuku, I'm in Kihei, but come to King's Cathedral in Kahului a couple times a week.
I won't train there this Friday... they're doing an encore performance of "Hotter Than Hell" at 7. It's free, and I'm going to be watching it ;D

hey gregg, giving you an update on my maui trip.... super bummed, doesn't look like I can go.  My friends and I decided it would be better to go after finals, sometimes in december....although I'm almost 100% its gonna cost more to go during the holidays...maybe I'll work on swimming there?  building a little hut and living off the sea for food?
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on November 05, 2009, 04:31:00 PM
Yep. It's going to cost almost 100% more during holiday time. Unless you get a special...
Let me know when you start swimming to Molokai. I'll chum the water... I mean... prepare a special welcome for you ;D

ok yea for sure. We're in kihei too, but usually train at iao or in weiluku by the state building, though we're still not very good. Never tryed King's Cathedral. let me know when the next time your training and maybe we can meet up.
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on November 05, 2009, 08:12:41 PM
Iao and State Building are nice places to train. That's where Shiloh usually trains.
My schedule is always getting messed up. I had too much paperwork tonight, so haven't got out yet. I have to be at work until 9 or so...

I train at KC before church on Weds if I'm not playing guitar [or real short if I am]. Fri is band practice, but it's canceled this week due to the show. I'm going to have to sneak in some training in the afternoon somewhere.

What's your schedule like, and how far are you from Kihei Community Center?

Really? I've never had any problem at KCC, except when Shiloh, Duke and I were trying to throw away a box spring that had fallen at the side of the road.

What do you play?

I PMed you with my cell #.

Well it was late and they were locking up when they happand to see us on the roof, which wasnt very easy to explain lol. We could have ran easy enough but my car was in the parking lot that they were about to lock up.

I play drums for a screamo band at the time but i play lots of other music too. What kind of music do you play?

Thanks ill send you mine too, just give me a call or text me next time your planning on training. we might go train tomarow but it depends on my homework load plus there is supposed to be a swell tomaro :) so if we go it wold probably be in the afternoon, but if we do ill let you know.

Stay off roofs. It draws too much bad attention, and they're usually not that great anyway.
Guitar, and used to do bass -- started old school punk, then moved to metal, now play whatever. Hillsong United, black gospel

Hike Iao scheduled for Sunday, about noon. It might be a fun hike. It might be a hard-core brutal rage froobling session. No idea who all is going to show up.

Wear some kind of shorts or swimwear. Everything else is optional.
Bring something to eat, unless you like guava, or already ate.
Bring something to drink, unless you like unfiltered, unpurified river water.

Cameras, packs, first aid gear, flares, cell phones, etc are possible things to bring. It will probably get wet, dirty and muddy.
If you wear glasses, wear some kind of strap. Swimming underwater looking for them after you bail is NOT fun. ;D

I don't know if ANYONE went.

I was so bummed. We spent hours and hours cleaning, shampooing carpets Saturday. Just one little room left to go. Wrong burner got turned on, caught a plastic cutting board on fire - really big flames, melting plastic, soot and smoke everywhere, and had to use a fire extinguisher to put it out. We were up till almost 6 am just cleaning up the kitchen.

The fans we were using to dry the carpets sucked in all the smoke and blew it into nice big black patches. It's almost 11 pm, and I finally finished, got everything cleaned up.

The worst thing is, the people I was supposed to meet were Brian "NoSole" Orosco, his bro and friends. I was able to give them advance warning, but still, I was looking forward to this hike for almost 2 months.

sorry fiance wanted to go to the mall yay, i swear she is a mall rat. but every time we go i always climb the two parking structures and then jump from the top to the walkway to macy's so all good. today i have to help move things at storage for her mum and my back is already killing me. after that i thought i heard barbaque. idk. but i have been going to the pool on lipoa to practice my front tucks and i am getting much more comfort in them.

Pool at Lipoa is great - I like to train around there on the walls and rails. And swim, of course.

Spencer from Vancouver will be in Wailea Feb 13-24. He wants to train. He's 16, and says he's been a traceur for 2.5 years.

that would be fun, i cant really train right now, let alone stand up right. my back is all kinds of messed up from flipping off that bored, i think its from the 360 front i tried and failed at, even tho i landed them plenty of times that day. i just failed one of them epic. i couldnt even move the coffee table to vacum last night. so idk how well i will be but will post when i feel better ok.

I blistered my feet pretty bad Monday, so need to do non-running for a couple more days until I can jump comfortably.
I went back to Kalama skate park, and there were only a few people skating, totally different vibe than the other day.
The more I go there, the more possibilities I see...

Go down by Kanani and S Kihei... There's a bridge/ culvert mauka side where Duke and Austin were doing kash and Austin was doing kong to cats, I think. It's not a straight on cat, you're coming in at an angle.

That comes to mind... If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Very cool about Kalama workout.
BTW What did you guys work on after I left?

Last night I tried a couple vaults, fast walking, jogging, and some moderate running. Healing well.

what did you do to mess your foot up in the first place? and it sounds like im not going to kalama, my fiance and i are having a few troubles, so we are hanging out. when you left spencer and i basically chatted a while went over to a couple of trees on the walkway, got a shave ice, i had tigers / sharks blood he had lemon lime, both with ice cream in the bottom and he thought it was a snow cone lol, then he tried it and wouldnt shut up about how good it was for a while, kinda like my first reaction to shave ice. we went back to the tree did a couple precisions and he gave me a break down lesson of how to kong handstand. pretty cool kid to bad he left already i wanted more training, and hopefully filming ah well, make films another time. i might go to the pool today with my fiance, maybe i can talk her into filming me do flips off the diving board? we will be down there from 2 till 3 or 4. might show up as early as 1 idk yet. but i gotta get some dives in :) well ttyl

I was going to run barefoot to Kalama. Only probs - I've been wearing shoes lately, so lost some callus. Also, the area between Lokelani IS and Welakahao was closed for blasting. So a couple miles on hot pavement...

Shave ice... ;D

I wanted to train more with Spencer, too. Oh well.

HA HA ppl think they own the oceans and beaches around here. but thats where we goin. maybe snorkel and board a bit ya?

"White Rock" is how I know that beach. Unfortunately, I need to pay bills in Kahului first.
Thanks for the invite. That would have been a blast.

I had to go to Kalama Skatepark last night. It was not a pretty scene.
Crowded. Few people skating. Quite a few smoking...
I was working, so only tried to pop up the small half-pipe one handed...

idk y but i love going to kalama park its got so many opportunities there and im so comfortable there. but as i was going to originally post im feeling like training over the weekend wanna join if you can and when i can work with your schedule to get at least 3 of us together, me, duke, greg, and hopefully talk the girls to coming with cause they want to learn but havent been fully introduced into it yet so they need a push in the right direction to get them motivated. so get back to me on a possible training this weekend or all weekend :) duces.. i forgot to mention that this might not be possible. supposed to go to hanna and camp :( free run out there then ya? might be back in time to train sunday, if not ah well. so let me know if any plans are popping up :)

Kalama is ok. I like it, but some people think too few obstacles, too spread out.
Have fun in Hana. Lots of good hiking, jumping the bridge if you're up for it.

SAT is Paia 8-1 for art show, Kahului 1-3:30 for rehearsal, work 4-10
SUN is maybe for afternoon. I think I'm playing guitar in Paia until 1 or so, then have to set up in Kahului at 5:15

Do the girls have any activity background? Martial arts, gymnastics, running?
We'll have to figure out where their strengths are - probably flexibility and technical ability, as opposed to brute strength.
It's going to look different from how you train... I think I'll watch some PKGen vids, and some of the beginner traceuse vids.

we didnt go to hana today :( not even twin falls we went to Maui medical er for my fiance, she was having adomnal pangs and so she got checked out she is ok. just needs to eat right. my fiance has track experience from school but she hasnt done anything active since 2-4 years now. amber, dukes gf amber has gymnastic exp. and some running things. both kinda like the idea of pk idk if they will really get into it even tho that would be nice. amber has always liked the idea of using pk for tag. emily is more into the idea for getting into shape. i have watched a few videos of traceuse free runners. and showed them and it got them inspired.

I'm not sure of my schedule. I know I should be on top of it.

Today I work til 4 or so. Then I'm free. I caught cold from my wife, so no big cardio.
TU TH are 7 am to 11 pm with few breaks. Probably 5 min workouts scattered through the day.
WE I'm scheduled to play guitar, so I'll jump around Kahului from 6-6:45 or so.

Go email. I think you have it ;D

Training with Michael and Spencer was fun. I'm getting ready to head out. Do something somewhere...

I was thinking Kalama but didn't pack shoes. Kihei Community Center is closed for some reason.
If I bike home, I will get sucked into chores and other fun stuff... choices, choices...

the comunity center is closed because they drained and are cleaning the big pool then they need a few days to fill it back up get the chemicals right and bring it back to temp. so in all they said two weeks or so. will probably be open again in one week from today. im free all day, i finally got a job will be starting at 6:30 am thursday till 2 and free all day after that :). i wanna get something in today so im tired enough to go to sleep early today. i woke up at 5:30am so as to get schedule down. im thinking kalama also. im like a kalama free running hoe lol. i like the veritility there, i have 2 other places i wanted to check out first for potential and routes then off to K-Park

I came past the pool during daylight and saw it was empty. With all the standing water in the field below, I wonder if they just drained everything into it?

Congrats on the job!

Let me know what places you tried out - if they're any good, post them in the hotspot thread.

yea you know it im leaving in about 20 minutes to a half hour, im trying ohukai and S kihei, then im trying the center by denny's, that one with the mural on the wall where you park, forgot name, and then off to a comunity place next to it then to kalama

Ohukai & S Kihei has nice rails, and the trees are fun to play on, tho the bark tends to come off... a couple cement picnic tables. I do a fair bit of rock hopping around there [basic stuff], and there's also plenty kiawe.

Center by Denny's = I want to say Dolphin Plaza... I jumped there once or twice, I think.
I haven't jumped Kamaole 3 park since they built the new entrance.

Hope you have fun. Let me know how it went.

Sprained R wrist a while ago, and it's still not 100%. Sigh. I spent FRI eve doing some L hand speed, thief and lazy vaults. Schedule this week: I'll get off 2-ish/ earlier in the day. Busy in the evenings, tho.

I work this morning til 1:30. Then I have drama practice in Kahului from 1 to 5. Then I work Domino's from 4 to 9pm.
[Practice is going to be cut short.]

Tomorrow is another...
Wake at 4:45 - play at church twice in Kahului, and then at Paia. Get home 1 pm or so. Try nap. Back to Kahului for the evening.

Next week evenings are crazy with long rehearsals and performances of "His Hands" at King's Cathedral FRI, SAT, SUN... I may have time in the early afternoon tho. :P Maybe 2-4, MON to WED?

Hey. My name is Jesse. I have been training for about 6 months. I am alright but training without anyone experienced can only get me so far. I live upcountry. Right next to giggle hill. I normally train over there but i like doing urban parkour a lot more. I have one friend Kaleo who does some PK with me every once in a while. I would love to meet up with some of the other Maui traceurs/freerunners.

How often do you make it to Kahului/ Wailuku?
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: dajester on April 02, 2010, 12:40:58 PM
Not to often but if someone wanted to meet me there i could definitely make time. I can almost always go on weekend. I go to Baldwin and i get out most days at 2:00 pm. So i could meet some fellow traceurs from like 2:00 - 5:30 on monday, tuesday, thursday and 1:15-5:30 on wendsdays. On furlough friday's i could meet up at any time. Normally after school i take the maui bus to haiku marketplace and go to the gym.

Yeah. My fastest time was around 18:50 and then i am trying to improve my 5:07 mile time. I was going to do track this year but i took it off so i could improve my parkour. Next year i'll probably do track and hurdles.

Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: dajester on April 02, 2010, 03:02:39 PM
Nice!! Sure thing! ;D It's nice knowing that there are more of us on maui then i thought. I hate how so little people know of it. Everyone is so judgmental about it. They always think we're up to something. We need these walls and rails more than they do. My dad is really against it he just can't think of it as a real sport. He says that i'm throwing away all my running talent for jumping around. Parkour is so much more fun then running for me. It is fun, stress relieving, it works out my entire body, and it lets me creative. Running never gave me any of that.
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 02, 2010, 03:16:38 PM
Your mom seems supportive, tho? For your dad, we can focus more on the MN side - practical application. MN [Methode Naturelle] is one of the big influences on PK. It combines walking, running, climbing, lifting, throwing, swimming, defense, etc: It was French military training about 50 to 100 years ago. The goal was "Be strong to be useful, first to yourself, then to others". Not that I'm always training to be useful, but it sure helps...

Plus, it's perfect for more rural areas, or areas where there aren't as many obstacles.

Let's take the conversation about breaking down movements either here or in regular talk story area. It really doesn't fit in "Wailuku Town"
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: dajester on April 02, 2010, 03:26:30 PM
Yeah, she is still worried but she is supportive. As for my dad, i don't really care if he supports me or not. Sooner or later he is going to see that parkour is my passion. MN seems interesting but i like PK more. Good point though. Should i just message you or should we just keep talking on here.
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 02, 2010, 03:36:34 PM
Introduce yourself to the rest of the HIpk people in TALK STORY, but keep stuff that's relevant to Maui here. [ie your personal training]

That's cool that you want to focus on parkour. I can help you with some things. You can help me with others.

I need to work on some things for a while, so sorry if I answer slowly.
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: dajester on April 02, 2010, 06:56:47 PM
alright. sounds good. There is one thing that i have wondered for a long time about. I train most of the time at giggle hill and i do mostly various types of vaults and cats leaps. I do, do some jumps and i feel like my rolls have good form. But later on that day and into the next day my knees feel pretty shot. I'm not sure exactly what i'm doing wrong. Or does everyone feel this way? For shoes right now i am using a pair of saucony's. I am expecting to get a pair of Ariake's at the end of the week

Stay tuned my man.

I'm also psyched to learn from Gregg. Parkour's my passion and with you and Gregg's help i can take it to a new level
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 03, 2010, 12:28:10 PM
Pain or just tired?

Jumping and landing stress the feet, ankles, knees, hips, core...
One of the [simplified] formulas is IMPACT = WEIGHT * HEIGHT * 2
So if you're jumping off a 2m [6'] wall, the impact is 4 times your body weight. That's for a good landing. For a bad landing, it's much higher. Say IMPACT = WEIGHT * HEIGHT * 10.

Your knees aren't used to that. So if they're feeling tired, go easy on them the next day [or two]
If you're feeling pain, that's a sign that something's wrong. Back WAY down, reduce your impacts a lot, give yourself a chance to heal.

Here are some things you can try:
Walk barefoot on uneven surfaces. It causes your ankles and knees to adjust, strengthen, become more flexible
Do some little jumps barefoot. Try to land as quiet as you can.
Deadlifts. Gradually build up and strengthen your legs, butt, and core.

I'm looking forward to training with Ozzi, too. The times I was able to go to Oahu, I wasn't able to meet up with him.

That's what i have been thinking about recently. In some ways he might seem really impressed and may even like it. But in other ways it seems like he'll think it's stupid and dangerous and be even more against it. More likely than not, i'll try to show him soon anyways.

He is pretty murf for how old he is. He is 52 and he can bench 225. He mostly runs. He's much faster than me. We throw the football and baseball around every once in a while and he used to box. But his knees have always been kinda messed up so i am not sure how much PK he would be able to do.

I suggest you wait til you meet with Gregg, hell go over some very basic stuff that you can teach your dad.

G, I know you got it, but you can go over safety and two handed vault. Some very basic precisions. QM's and since he likes to run, some agility drills and what not.

I know like you said, MovNat will probably attract him more. So yeah, I know you got it, I just wanted to get my hand in there ;)

I never learned safety vault, so looks like I'll be working on that one myself.

R wrist is STILL bugging me. I did a bunch of vaults last night on the set as we were tearing it down. It was sooo much fun, but wrist was complaining after.

Still planning to meet up WEDS afternoon. Let me know if anything changes on your end.

I know a lot of vaults already: lazy, monkey, working on kong, turn, gate, two handed, lazy turn, working on my dash. As far as precsicion goes i can do around a 7 foot same level percision.

I got the R side safety quickly, but the L side I almost bailed on. I'm used to CLEARING the rail, not doing a side plank onto it ;D
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: dajester on April 06, 2010, 05:56:17 PM
whats the purpose for the safety vault? Couldn't you just do a speed vault instead?
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 07, 2010, 12:34:41 AM
Purpose for safety vault? I don't know.

In real life you don't always know what's on the other side of a wall. There are walls at Grand Wailea parking structure that have like a 35' drop on the other side. With the safety vault you can stall on top, before committing to landing? That's just a guess.

If I'm jumping "blind" I prefer to 2 hand vault on instead - that way I have both hands and feet on the obstacle, and can crawl to a better drop area if I need to.

Like I said - I didn't know the safety vault or use it. I've seen it in videos of PkGen training kids, but I didn't know it had a name. Never used it before yesterday - not on purpose at least.

oh, that makes sense. I have had that almost happen to me a couple times before. But luckily i checked. If i hadn't i would have thrown myself into a giant dumpster.

personally i think preparing a spot is the best step. i dont typically do blind jumps because every time i do there is almost alway one of the following: Rails, Concrete, Animals, People, bushes, other's and etc. so i tend to spot everything first. then leap. hope to train with you soon jesse, sadly a turn of events has lead to me getting kicked out and having to move off island. i will be leaving on the 15th of this month. so if we can meet up at queen K mall or at mcc i would gladly meet you there. im free all the time now.

gregg do you have a phone? i always try get you to call me but you never do. use that *67 crap if you have to block ur number but i wanna know where, when, what, and who. cause i gotta get out there
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 09, 2010, 12:32:25 AM
I have phone, and I called you - remember? Amber answered - you guys were all in the car going somewhere, and Duke said "Hi" to me.

Also, I've tried to text you, but your old phone was on some network that my t-mobile did not like.

So did you and Jesse hook up or not?

If we don't hear from Jesse I'm up for Kalama tomorrow. Otherwise, I can shell out for bus fare, but Geri has the car. I should be off work 1:30 or so... so if we're at Kalama, I could get there at 2. Kahului I'd get to Queen K around 2:40.

R wrist is still sketchy. It's really annoying me. I can do a lot of L hand stuff tho.

What were you doing? Did they kick you off property, or what? Details, man! ;D

Water fountains at State building, Wailuku library, Iao School, Wailuku Elem, Wells Park maybe...
I try to load up on water earlier in the day - not so much that it's sloshing around, but a good amount.

So it looks like me and you in Kihei, Michael. Kalama or somewhere else?

:)  Aloha everybody.    Its been a while... I just got the computer fixed so yea im back.   Its exciting to see new faces on the Maui boards. Lookin good.
I've been dealing with my back these past few months, the scoliosis acting up alot and trying to take the proper route...   So I haven't been as active since here,  just surfing, more MN than PK.  It seems I take a break in the winter when the surf rolls around, then start again in spring to get the conditioning back.  I gotta lose some gut and get the cardio up.
So I've been frequenting Wailuku a bit this past week. Mornings/noonish.  I hope things went well with the State cops? Jesse.  I've never had any trouble from them around there.   I try and stay low-key as much as possible. Work on the stealth if ya know what I mean.  Anywho, its good to be back and see you guys are doing good.  I always seem to get inspired and motivated when here.  I hope to train with you guys soon. Aloha

Dude, it is SOOOO good to see you back on. If Jesse wasn't grounded, I was going to text you - see if you could meet up today.
Are you still working both jobs? What's your schedule look like?
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Shiloh on April 09, 2010, 11:29:57 AM
Thanks G , good to be back.   Im still doing the evenings @ 630, and the day job fluctuates.  I have been pretty open in the day for a while now though.  So i'm down...  Taking that I can keep up with you animals.  ;)  I was gonna head down to Waihe'e for a  beach jog and some MN, mainly cause I got some blisters yesterday using my old Swiss's (been mainly barefooting it).  But I could surely adapt...  What you guys got planned?  Just remembered I got a doctors visit at 1430 today.

Shiloh's # is correct. He responds faster to texts.
Jesse - get together with Shiloh as much as possible. He lives Wailuku, so text him when you get off school, see if he can train.

Jesse goes to Baldwin, so he's in area almost every day.
How long is your appointment scheduled? Is your doctor mostly on time, or is he like mine [behind schedule, long waits].
I'm up for anything. I have my bus fare $ and the whole afternoon free.

Shiloh - what is your doctor like? We can totally hit Wailuku today if you're up for it.

[There's a spot where you can see what other users are doing - I was watching Shiloh, but saw you pop up, too.]
Ok. Michael, let's hit up Wailuku. We'll train up there, and hook up with Shiloh when he gets out.

Oops. There you go. There's a post. Let me see what it was...

We'll get plenty warm-up walking from Queen K up to Wailuku. Plenty. Start drinking water ;D

Def get some grinds. I gots to load up here in Kihei, because I only have bus fare until I get paid later tonight.
Also, we got to remember to get back to Queen K before the last bus leaves... Walking back to Kihei is no fun. It's better than hitching, tho.

ok so someone bring a clock i got my phone that works, and grab a schedule too. i think im going to leave on the earlier bus cause i am in need of some serious food. or i can catch the bus into kihei get food catch the next bus out :) from safeway ha ha bus buddies
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 09, 2010, 01:31:14 PM
Last bus back is 7:30. Easy enough to remember.
Shiloh needs to quit before 7, so that works about perfect for him, too.
I got my phone, and will set alarm.

If I don't see you at 1:45 bus, I'll text you when I get to Queen K.
I'm not sure where Shiloh's doctor is - but he can text me when he's pau, and we can let him know where we are.

General thought is brisk walk/ light jog up to Wailuku. It's pretty much all uphill, so don't want to go too fast. We'll have time before Shiloh joins up. I'm thinking we might as well head all the way up to state building first. Start with the far stuff, then maybe start working back toward Queen K.

I've never really checked Baldwin - not sure how they are about trespassing. The other Wailuku schools have been pretty cool about it. Also want to check War Memorial... remembering some stuff there that may be fun for next time.

ok so i didnt reply to fast i know, but yea you got my number i hope. the 276 1816 number is what my phone is. i will set an alarm as well. if i leave the house right now i can catch the bus to queen k and get some grub and maybe blow a few bucks at fun factory. maybe do some vaults out front and then play around on the parking structure.... acutally come to think about it i wont make the bus i dont think.... id cut i really close if i left right now while typing this but i gotta get my clothes on and grab my cash.... could be close will see if i miss it i can always come back here and stretch or something.

(edit) yay i started a new page :)

Just checked t-mobile. My balance is low - only about 6 minutes left. Maybe 9 text messages.
So if you need to text me, make it a good one!

2:05 and counting...
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Michael Porreca on April 09, 2010, 01:47:06 PM
wow sounds like my phone, i have unlimited text but only (checking phone) 13 whenever minutes left. doesnt t-mobile get free to t-mobile? idk. but im not catching a bus after all, my fiance's mum has an apointment at 1 so we are leaving in half an hour to go into town she will drop me off at the mall. but after she done i will take bus. so when you get off the bus.. btw what time does the bus get to queen k ... i should be right at the loading / unloading zone. i will eat light enough to get rid of my grumble but not enough to make me sick.

Islander will arrive at 2:30 [usually a bit late]. I'll meet you at the drop zone.
I have pay as you go phone, so every text costs, every phone costs. No free nottink.

I am already super hydrated. I may pack some water with me tho. I hate carrying pack, but I have it.

So... we walked up to Wailuku from Queen K. It started to rain - not bad, but enough to make everything a bit slick. Poor Shiloh got stuck at the doctors and couldn't make it. We only got asked to leave 4 places.

Sitting around taking video is no fun, when you can jump. So there's not much here...

i might be pulling a double today... um tomorrow. ahh tuesday. i work 7-4pm and then i might cover for jon 4-10pm. so my day could be full. but if i dont work the double i have to go cash my check, buy some goods, hopefully some vibrams, and i got a cheap membership to valley isle fitness. 35 a month which in my eyes isnt bad its a month to month contract so that makes it easy....um...what else. idk but maybe we can do something? btw i got minutes on my phone again so i can use it more yay.

I don't know my plans for tomorrow morning yet - don't work till 4.
Sunday - will be in Paia till noon or so. After that? No idea - may be free all afternoon.

Sorry for the random interruption, but...

I REALLY can't wait to get back to Maui now! I was there in 2006 for my birthday to go Scuba Diving, but I went alone. Now, even if I go alone, I'll have a bunch of friends to train with next time I go on vacation!

SWEET!

Unfortunately, it's probably gonna be a while.  :'(

Ok, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

how do i post pictures?

there is a button/icon below the italics icon and above the  ;) and  :D icon.   click it and it give you two img in brackets... inbetween that put image location...so copy image location from where ever is and put that link in between it.

so img  (copied image location link) img

so post pics on facebook, photobucket or where ever and right click select "copy image location" and paste that link inbetween the two img things you get from clicking on icon with frame in it that says insert image if you hold your cursor over it.

Michael: CD is at Haggai front desk... I may bring it to Duke's if you don't pick it up soon.

WED: Saw Jesse looking at this thread earlier.

I'm going to train a couple times today... doing my monthly MN test things at 1:30 or so. Except I forgot shoes.
This evening I'm planning to get to KC in Kahului early. G wants to be there at 5, so that gives me an extra hour or so to play.

THU: Stolen moments/ GTG
FRI: KC - practice has been getting out late, 7 last week. Still gives me decent time to jump.
SAT: Stolen moments/ GTG

Yep. It's an injury that could only happen barefoot or in a split-toe shoe. I landed on the grass on the balls of my feet. It was just soft enough that my big toes caught and got yanked down as I fell forward. After that, I wasn't in mood to run/ etc. Would only have injured it more.

So I sat on 2nd floor with my feet in a gallon plastic bag of ice cubes. Threw ice off the balcony into one of the ponds

Ouch! Yea, sounds moderately painful.

Well, that's one way to relax... or were you trying to counteract the effects of global warming in the pond?

Hope you can get back to training soon. I'm making mild progress, but if I explained, you all would laugh at me, so we can leave it at "making mild progress". LOL
But we had a hell of a storm here the other day, including two different tornado warnings. Everythings been soaking wet.

So, what is this test you were taking?

At the end of every month I try to do the 12 tests from Georges Hebert's "Methode Naturelle" training:
Throw 16# with each arm, standing and running high jump, standing and running long jump... 100m, 500m, and 1500m runs, rope climb, 40 kg lift, 100m swim, and underwater breath hold.

I wouldn't laugh at your progress... I had to go through the process every time I got hurt...
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: FrostySTL on April 29, 2010, 12:19:57 PM
Oh, I know you wouldn't laugh, at least, not in a mean way.  ;D

Actually, I feel much better about today. Even though tomorrow I'm gonna pay for it. LOL

I actually did some vaulting! (My first ever) I have built a rail in my backyard, but I made it too high. (Yea, 3' is too high, my brain just refuses to let me jump over that) So I lowered it to a bit above 2', and actually got some done. I started out with a safety vault, then worked my way up to something like a speed vault. I say "something like", because I was landing on the wrong foot, which of course killed any momentum. I split them up into three different 'sets' of practice, because I was getting a little winded doing them, and didn't want to get tired and screw up. Then, after a break, I went jogging for 20 mins! All this is after doing 110 crunches Tues night.

I'm gonna be a sore puppy.

I would SO love to be doing all of this on Maui. :P  I stayed in Kihei when I was there, and not a day goes by that I don't wish I was living there.
Title: Re: TRAIN MAUI
Post by: Gregg HIPK on April 29, 2010, 12:50:32 PM
I hope you keep a training log, or some kind of journal? It's nice to have some kind of record... or even a short video of where you are now, so you can see your progress.

Congrats on the vault. If you work on your landings and rolls [clean up after the dogs, first ;D ] your brain will get more comfortable with higher heights.

If you work one thing hard, take it easy on that the next day: Today I'm going to concentrate on upper body stuff ;D

I love living in Kihei. Some people think it's too hot, dry and dusty, but I don't have a problem with that.

Tell them to go visit Arizona in July sometime, they will change their mind about what "hot, dry and dusty" really means.

Phoenix Arizona:
       High/Low Temp.   (ºF) Relative Humidity
          Average            A.M.     P.M.
July      105/80             43%     20%

getting over my fear of heights more. I started doing 1 handed roundoffs and handstands on the edge of a pavilion at giggle hill, Still practicing my kongs on some sawhorses, and trying to get better at some of my bar work. Jesse - sounds like you're making good progress.
Saw horses may not be stable enough for a good kong - might wobble too much to get a proper push off...

Michael - are you still on island?

My toe is still dark purple. It didn't swell much, so I can wear loose shoes. Limping :P

Michael - I just left a message on your phone. Are you in Montana or something? Doesn't help that Duke, Brandon, etc are not on forum. Sigh...

Grant Lechner from Chicago's going to be on island at the end of the month. He says he's been training for about 2 years.

did some training up on giggle hill. a couple of good kongs, speed vaults, and dashes. Also nailed a 6 foot tick-tack to precision and a tick-tack to dash (off of a tree and onto or over a wooden ladder on its side that was normally used for the paint ball forts.

I did some little hops today. Toes are a little sore and tingly, but not from that.
See if I can get in some BF training this afternoon. Very easy walking kine.

http://toughmudder.com/

Look like fun? The CA one looks the best to me, of the 3 "featured". I'm going to have to practice the crawl under wire 8" high when I heal up a bit more.

Already lost stomach definition. :(

Already lost stomach definition. :(

At least you HAD it to lose it! :P

I still have a layer of fat (Not too bad, though) over my stomach, but everyone keeps telling me I don't need to lose any weight.
Of course, all these people are jealous of how thin I already am compared to them, sooooo..... LOL

I'm having an issue with my wrists, mostly the left one, where it hurts to press my palms flat, like when doing a push up. I can hang from them for pull ups with no issue at all, so I'm just avoiding the movement that hurts for now. My wrists have "crackled" as I rotate them for many years now. I've also started taking calcium supplements, as I've never been good getting calcium, and my bones probably arn't dense enough. I've added light jogging to start working up the leg muscles, in addition to my upper body weight routine, to give the bones some encouragment to toughen up.

I havn't done any more with the vaults, as that agitates the wrists.  :'(

The toughmudder thing looks interesting. I'm obviously nowhere near ready for that! It did get me wondering, though... I wonder how a group of Parkour trained athletes would do in something like the Eco-Challenge?

frosty the wrist thing sounds like the problem i have with my right wrist. did you ever severely sprain, fracture, or break it? i fractured my wrist in 08 and it still hasnt quite healed proper, i just keep it stretched and limber up before you do things. warm up and cool downs are very important to PK. I have taken note that when i dont do a cool down exercise like stretching my limbs get a tight feeling and my wrist acts up more. try to nurse it but dont try to baby it. honestly id ask greg for more info on hurt joints as this is only my opinion and greg always finds a way to get medical information from somewhere. good to see maui is growing. i think the mtv pk challange is bringing more kids into it as the billings group has recently grew by 3 ppl since thursday's airing of MTV'S U PK C. and montana as a whole has grown about 6-8 members. spreading awareness is a great thing, and fun to do. i will have a picture post in a few days of me konging wells fargo lol its a 10' drop to concrete so ima be wearing a jacket :( i already did the drop several times now it would just make a fun picture opportunity.

Although mentally I am in Maui, sadly, I am not there physically.  :'( :'( :'( I visited there in 2006, and a part of me never left. I need to go back sometime and get myself back together again.  ;D

The only thing I've ever done to my wrists, is when I was in boy scouts, a couple of guys thought it would be "funny" to have one guy crouch down behind me, while the other one pushed me backwards over him. So, being surprised, and not knowing how to fall, I caught myself with my hands, palm down, fingers pointing backwards... on a tile floor. It caused a hairline crack in one of the bones of my left forearm, and I was in a cast for a few weeks.

But that was more than 30 years ago. (And the only broken bone I've ever had.) The pain has only started recently, after I was doing push-ups for a while. (Before I even heard about PK)

I'm sure it's just angry with being used after so long of a rest, but I don't want to screw up and turn it into something bad.

Couple of questions and comments: Do your knees normally hurt after about a hour training (not as soon as you finish but later on that night and the next morning)? When you do a wall run do you normally grab onto the top with 1 or 2 hands. And for  the comment: My friend nailed a 5 foot double kong i tired it but i keep getting scared mid-air and straddling over the second one

On a good day I will feel exhausted but not pain. Try work on ankle flexibility and conditioning, soft landings, and the roll. Pain is body's signal that something is wrong.

Wall run... If you grab with one hand it gives you a few extra inches of reach. So that's pretty typical to see.

Double kong... I don't think I've ever done one, either. It took me forever to get single kong.

Yeah. i need to train with you sometime greg so you can help me improve my landings because my knees are always shot afterwards. I just cleared up my camera so i am going to try to make a new montage of videos pretty soon.

When you do a wall run do you normally grab onto the top with 1 or 2 hands.

There is a great Urban Current tutorial video for Wall Ups by Adam McC where he talks about that. If I got the gist right, it's mostly personal preference. He prefers one hand, but does say you have to have enough grip strength to hold on that way. He uses the other hand to judge the distance from the wall, to help get greater height.

I'm sure I'm leaving points out.  ;)

Frosty - Well... yeah. You have to be strong enough 1 handed otherwise it's a Wall Fail, not a Wall Up ;D

Jesse - find some place with a loud floor, and practice landing on it. Start from jumping up and down flat on the flat surface, and then build up -- 1', 2', 3', 4'. The goal is to make the landings as quiet as possible. You'll find that barefoot will help - shoes tend not to flex, and create additional noise. I find that as I get tired, my jumps get louder.

I really need to train with you guys. I can do small landings, small vaults right now. I'm planning to build up but avoid injury. Being overly careful, probably.

yeah. i'll work on it. my friend kaleo is turning into a nuts traceur. he landed a triple kong i'm going to try to make a video of his kongs pretty soon so you can see. Right now he can only do the kongs in a sand arena jumping over these hip high barrels and i can do a pretty long single kong over two wooden sawhorses on the grass, thats type of kong that i can still do better than him. I am going to push him to join apk and subscribe to glyphmedia and UrbanCurrent

Triple kong?! Oh man... that sounds so fun. Keep expanding your limits. Wow.
It would be great to have Kaleo join us on the forum.

Anyone want to meet up some time soon. I really need some help with my landings and rolls. Body has been very sore. And i am sure that i must be doing something wrong. I did improve my roll a little but it still needs work.

I've got stuff every day and night this week. I'll be cramming my training into the odd moments of free time before/ during/ after. I don't know how to get in touch with Duke/ Brandon/ etc. other than showing up on Duke's lanai...

I haven't heard anything from Shiloh since his doctor's visit. Check your old PM - I think I sent you his number. Let me know if you don't have it.

Well i went out to that beach again and tried the front flip and it went terrible. I was scared of it again and only did a couple good ones with some bad bails. But i am going to keep trying. I'm hoping that after a couple months more months that i will be able to do them more consistently. I also did two new moves today, the 270 cat ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRcobiD8ERA0 ) and this move, i'm not sure what it's called (skip to 00:38 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOWc_WgyIj8)

it's almost exactly like that, except the way i have seen other people do it and the way i think looks better is, instead of vault to sitting then going over one leg after the other, i like to to one leg after the other over and on leg after the other back. it looks better to me

Jesse - take a look at Ryan and Derek's visit thread http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php/topic,27480.0.html
Looks like they'll be here July 18 - 23. Derek's just coming off that bad knee injury, so I'm trying to put together a list of possibilities for them... maybe lower impact, with an emphasis on diving and exploring abandoned places, or places that would be cool to photo.

Shiloh/ anybody else... feel free to add ideas. If you're on Maui, that's a bonus.

Finally learned how to do a kick up and i am trying to learn how to do a wallspin. As far as places to go: giggle hill is great. Just start at the bottom and make your own trail up to the top. Lots of fallen over tree for vaulting and percisioning. It's a really good workout to. Once you get to the top the paintball bases are fun for vaulting and tic tacking over. Then i normally do some parkour in the playground. There is also a great precision/ vault from the wall next to the flags to or over this small wall. There's also some over turned soccer goal that can be fun to play on. If you do go up the hill, be cautious because it has paintball players up there sometimes. They normally come on fri-sun but they could be up there pretty much any day.

Had a great training day yesterday. Trained in the forest vaulting, climbing, and jumping from tree to tree. Practiced my technique and for the first time in a while my knees aren't shot the next day. I also did about a 6 foot kash vault over a cement table.

Hi Maria - I hope you enjoy your time on Maui. I won't be able to train due to bike accident.
Jesse - Good to see you're still active and training.
