Title: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Ozzi on July 11, 2009, 12:17:37 AM
Are you insane, bipolar, psycho, or plain simple you love attention? We love you for existing but whenever you get a crazy attack, bring it here!!!!

How we used this at HIpk:

If you're going way off topic, we tell you "Take it to Crazy Talk".
If you've decided to write all your posts in 5-7-5 haiku, "Take it to Crazy Talk".
If you're trying to see how much you can type in one breath without stopping - like you're holding your breath and typing really fast and making mistakes and not caring about punctuation or spelling or anything except not passing out, "Take it to Crazy Talk".

Don't take it personal. I spend way too much time here myself.

What! Who broke "Talk Story"? I get an error message each time I try to read it.

Just replayed over there.
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!

Just applied at a security company. Do you think they're going to Google me? [yes] Do you think they'll find my log? [yes]. Do you think they'll see the bits about jumping the shopping complex they guard? [probably].

So... do I delete some of my older log entries, the whole thing, or not worry about it? Your opinions?

On the good hand, I know the back side of their property like few other people, including people who work there. On the other good hand, it's been quite a while since I've jumped there.
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Ozzi on July 27, 2009, 08:52:51 PM
I say they can only see that as a good thing for they know you will be able to "guard" the property well as you are familiar with it (getting to places before others etc). Also, your skills can be seen as a positive thing, for they "know" there will be no one able to scape you.

Replaying super quick, so no much thought into this but will give you my thoughts later.

Gregg, are you going to be a rent-a-cop? lol
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on July 29, 2009, 10:32:42 AM
I'm looking for afternoon/ evening/ night work. At least at this property, the rent-a-cops get to be outside, walking around. If I had to sit at a desk staring at monitors for 8 hours, I would be fired within the first week, for falling asleep.

We've been here five weeks...
How do you feel about it:
What's good and what's bad?

[You don't have to answer in haiku]

nice new avatar pic bro (I'm main land so I don't have to use Brah). I feel its pretty cool. Just as good ask the old HIPK forum.....maybe a little less action though.

I find it practical and yes, it safes me from having to be at two forums. It just seems as if the activity is lots slower. Not sure everyone made the transition.

It was especially slow with Ozzi on vacation ;D It's GOOD to have you back.

Ryan's increased the amount of posting he does. I've tried. Ben, Matt and JC are posting... Ozzi, of course...
It's weird - I know there are more people at APK, but I almost feel lonely. Why? Life stress. People posting less. I need a good day of training.

Today was better - got mail from Pilou from DC... He's translated more of Hebert's "Practical Guide", and has put in a lot of what I worked on. I'm still waiting for BionicGrape from New England PK... he signed the book out of Harvard Library. He was going to scan the missing theory pages for me.

I don't miss the spam, especially the porn spam, or having to clear out all the spam-bots. I do miss Evan, Johnny, Shiloh, Sala, ... people who posted a lot at HIpk, and aren't posting here. (Or anywhere PK related.)

What I'd suggest is everyone post at least a couple times a week in Talk Story or Crazy Talk. That may help this forum feel more like home again. Just an idea...

Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Ozzi on August 18, 2009, 02:24:10 PM
Yeah, it does feel lonely. HIpk is such a young community but still out there, just not as committed to the ohana feeling as many other bigger communities. Which is kinda sad, cuz being such a small islands we could get closer even easier.

Gregg, it is my goal to plan a Maui trip next year to train with you. Maybe if the whole National Jam comes true you can make it over here.
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on August 18, 2009, 02:57:39 PM
When you come, we HAVE to hit Iao. Take a look at Tim and Tom's pics in the AUG 2 thread. If we can get Shiloh out, will be even better.

I think we've had ohana feeling at times. I'm feeling a LOT better now. ;D Thanks.

National Jam... seeing the vids of Colorado made me realize how SLOW my progression is. When I try to rush it, I get hurt. So I'm going to keep on pressing on with MN inspired stuff. I keep seeing progress there, and I know there's still room for improvement.

Swim to Oahu... I know it's possible. I don't really want to do it. If it becomes a reality, I'll look for cheap tickets. ;D

can't you guys just take a boat? I mean arnt you right there?
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on August 20, 2009, 12:42:36 AM
It's not that close. 100 miles of mostly open ocean. There was a boat, but it was more expensive than taking plane. It doesn't run any more. Planes run pretty frequent between Maui and Oahu. If there's a national jam, I'll try to find some way to save up some money.

Should we un-sticky some of the stickies?

I'm thinking maybe the poetry thread, the Real Names thread, and the APK Affiliate thread.
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on September 09, 2009, 04:44:14 PM
Every once in a while I do a "FAST" of the forums. "Post only as much as I could type in one breath", "write all my posts in haiku", "go cold turkey for a month or two at a time"...

I'm going to post only once a day, in Crazy Talk, for the rest of this week. If anyone can think of a short, creative challenge for next week, let me know, or I will do something mind-bogglingly terrifying...

Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on September 10, 2009, 05:10:31 PM
Tomorrow I plan to post only in Methode Naturelle - I'm wading through the pics of old French guys swimming across rivers with rifles.

I hate to waste my one post on something so short. Oh well. More time to figure out solution to $ flow problems...

REMINDER: 90% of technical problems can be solved by
1: Is it plugged in?
2: Is it turned on?
3: Is it hooked up right?
4: Is it on the right channel [right settings]?

I keep forgetting this ;D

No need to ask why I'm grinning
I finished the section on SWIMMING
Now me and my friends
Must tie up loose ends
The formatting work's just beginning

--- --- ---

Scraped my toes on a palm tree vault
Konged and landed on some kind of nut
Sea urchin spine broke off in my heel
Is barefoot training fun or what?

Before the first tank rolled into battle
Children played games in the fields
Their laughs are gone, their games forgotten
Except as letters in old books

"The Jumping Sheep", "Le Saute-Mouton"
Not the casual Flash game for small girls
But something more vibrant, vital, perhaps violent
Played by 16 year old apprentice sailors

Who couldn't spell...
Google Translate HATES it
I struggle to understand the rules
But will post them soon...

umm im a little confused gregg???
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on September 17, 2009, 12:26:04 PM
There's a little section in Hebert's book on games, sport, and manual labor. Problem is that the games are just listed by name, as if everyone knows them. That was probably true in 1909 France, but not in 2009 USA.

So I'm trying to hunt down these games. The first one I hit ["Le Saute-Mouton" - "The Jumping Sheep"] is this terrible document that Google Translate can't handle. I'm not sure if it's misspelling, or slang... It's like someone who doesn't know English well trying to translate Ozzi's forum posts to Russian. ;D

But it was played by 16 year old mousses [apprentice sailors] at a French school. That's credibility - because Hebert taught at schools for apprentice sailors. So it's probably the right version of the game, and not some sissy version.

I'll put them all in a new thread in the GOING NATURAL area.

Speaking of Russian
Have you seen the Oleg vid (http://vimeo.com/6495648)
Ozzi put on the HIpk frontpage?
Years of footage
become

A kinetic collage
that makes my moves look like fromage

Thanks, Ryan. BTW thanks for posting in Hebert's Practical Guide thread. I'm glad someone's looking through it! I didn't make any progress on the MN Games today, but I found a description for

Alex - over on HIpk it got so dead some days that I created a "Spambot" account, just so I didn't have all the posts on one subject. That's pretty lame. So thanks for posting here in Hawaii, even if you're not here yet.

Ozzi - thanks for letting me know Brian's going to be here. I sent him a note and contact info...

JC - Brian Orosco from SFPK is coming some of the same days you said you were coming to Kihei. Are you still planning to fly over tomorrow?

November last year I was 185#, but I've stopped eating and lifting heavy weights.
I'm way below that now, and still losing. 159#. I don't think I qualify any more.

Austin from SFPK and Shiloh from HIpk Maui are both big guys...

Why do smart people do stupid things?

THIS ARTICLE (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427321.000-clever-fools-why-a-high-iq-doesnt-mean-youre-smart.html?full=true) in New Scientist says it's because "smart" - how well you do on an IQ test - is only part of what we use to make decisions. Our brain uses two different systems: one is intuitive and spontaneous; the other is deliberative and reasoned. Think of our minds as searchlights. IQ measures the brightness of the searchlight, but where we point it also matters. Intelligent people perform better only when you tell them what to do.

How to avoid making foolish decisions

It's easy for your mind to lead you up the garden path when it comes to making a good decision. Below are ways to avoid the common pitfalls.

CLEAR YOUR MIND Judgements can often be based on a piece of information you have recently had in mind, even if it is irrelevant. For example, bidding high at an auction after pondering the height of the tallest person in the room.

DON'T FALL FOUL OF SPIN We have an inclination to be strongly influenced by the way a problem is framed. For instance, people are more likely to spend a monetary award immediately if they are told it is a bonus, compared with a rebate.

DON'T LET EMOTIONS GET IN THE WAY They often interfere with our assessment of risk. One example is our natural reluctance to cut our losses on a falling investment because it might start rising again.

BE FACT BASED Don't allow your beliefs and opinions to cloud your analysis.

THINK CAREFULLY ABOUT THE LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES When considering how a course of action will make you feel, talk to someone who has been through a similar situation rather than try to imagine your future state of mind; run mental movies about how an option might play out.

LOOK BEYOND THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION Don't accept the first thing that pops into your head.

You should have seen the one I sent to Ozzi. ;D
Conspiracy theory about an evil force trying to take over and control parkour.

I wish I'd had that idea at the beginning of the month - I really wanted to do NaNoWriMo but didn't have any good ideas. So now I finally have an idea but only 5 days to write 50000 words. [To win]

Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!

I guess I'll go for it. If I can get over 10000 words today, I'll make the effort to win. That's a TON of words, but NaNo doesn't have to be coherent. It's just a rough draft. See you on the other side.

Nope. My pace is too low. No way I can finish on time at this rate. It's like trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon [26 miles in 3 hours] and realizing after an hour that instead of 9 miles, you've only gone 1. Maybe next year.

I mean, I'm all for people having their own spiritual and religious beliefs, but come on...people need to learn that it's ok to admit that they don't know something.  ;)

A switch has been flipped in my brain.

I watched "Speed Air Man" and Frosti's vid, and a couple other vids... and I discovered that I was no longer inspired by parkour videos. Thankfully, speed knitting videos (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1971791/guinness_book_of_world_records_worlds_fastest_knitter/) also do not inspire me. Neither do Michael Angelo Batio speed metal videos (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/yt-n-hrHnppL-s/speed_kills_3_michael_angelo_batio_metal_method_dvd/).

Vaulting is still fun. I'm inspired by a photo of my nephew cat-crawling a fallen tree. Guitar is still fun. Drawing. Playing at the beach. So it's not that I'm depressed and life is gray. I think I'm just tired of being on the computer. See how long this lasts...

BTW - I can't make it to HI National Jam. I'm bummed but not surprised.

A hui hou...

there is always time to play G, you of all people should know that, when the body is tired the mind can still go.

Swim, bike, walk, hang of a tree for a bit, throw a ball, look at kids playing, play with them, watch the ocean, sit and embrace it, play with sand, make funny faces, go people watching, stay one night at the beach..... make love to your wife.

I gotta feeling... today's gonna be a great day [x2]... today's gonna be a great great...

Stacie - Where you hoping to transfer?

APA's DSM-5 (http://www.dsm5.org/ProposedRevisions/Pages/PersonalityandPersonalityDisorders.aspx) Seeking a new definition for psychopathic personality disorders. They've dropped from 12-14 personality traits/ disorders to five. They're also trying to define personality traits, facets of those traits, levels of impairment, etc. DSM-5 is set for release in 2013. It's not as fast as the "Are You a Psychopath" quiz, but it's way more interesting... 'cuz it's the real thing.

It got me thinking, "Do traceurs have a way of thinking about themselves, others, and the world around them that is significantly different? Who tries parkour? Who drops out?"

fun fact if you diagnose according to dsmIV about 85% of people have AT LEAST ONE mental disorder...so being "normal" is actually kind of rare.  also dsm has never been evidence based...so be wary of how much you prescribe to it.

Stacie - glad you'll be back. Also, I'm praying that knee heals well, quickly!

fun fact if you diagnose according to dsmIV about 85% of people have AT LEAST ONE mental disorder...

Exactly. So that's why it's here in Crazy Talk ;D The way I see it, the new personality thing can be [over]simplified as:

1: How much negative emotion does the person have [sadness  :(, fear  :o, anger  >:(, disgust  :P, etc.]?
2: How much is that negative turned inward ->[to self]<- or outward <-[towards others]->?
3: How much do they control/ contain impulses vs. embrace/ express impulses?
4: Thought processes on range from [][] rigid compulsion, --- linear, /\/\ random leaps

MindSick happens at the extremes.

sorry about my other post i forgot even just after reading this thread. Anyways anyone who can help please do with these questions!!! What you guys think about the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Is it a good school? How is the campus? Are the teachers good? Is the marine biology program any good? And most important is there a parkour community there who is open to new comers?
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on February 11, 2010, 12:43:33 PM
http://www.studentsreview.com/HI/UHM.html rate UH-M a C- and most would not return. I thought maybe there was a bias, but after checking some other schools I know... I'm going to guess this is fairly accurate.

The marine bio program was rated ok, but after reading the comments, I would probably go elsewhere.

I've heard the parkour is great there, tho ;D The HIpk Oahu guys go there a lot.

Ryan: nevermind. The DSM-5 personality just looks like the extreme, pathological version of Myers-Briggs. Blah!  :P Looks like they just took out the scale for S v N [Sensing v. iNtuiting]  or maybe combined it.

I didn't see it when I was typing it, but it felt really obvious to me when I drew it on paper.

eck16: I think there were several things going on: wrong expectations about Hawaii, culture clash between local and mainland, some programs that are weak, financial problems [culture + bureaucracy + big expense for people from ML], and lots of students commute [so not as much of a social scene as in a "College Town"].

I could be wrong. Some people love UH-M, and I've heard good things about their Marine Bio program. UH-Hilo I've heard well, and the students there rated it a little better, but you're living in a small town in the middle of a rainforest in the middle of an ocean. Some people can't handle it.

A lot depends what you expect, and what you want.

yeah I saw those reviews and that site but I wasn't sure if it was credible. I guess they are however. Thanks.

since i can only write with one hand i'm going to make this short...i agree with gregg it's a (C) to a (C-) school for the average student.  if you are from here and most likely wont find a scholarship to help you cover costs of going school on mainland...then that grade might go up a little if you're strapped for cash.  another thing is that although a university provides resources...education is only as good as how the student takes advantage of those resources.  what i mean is if you wait for them to teach you, inspire you, indulge you...you're wasting your time paying to go to college.  I'm a senior at UH Manoa psychology major and I have o say I've gotten a 100k education here in the island.  i say this because i utilized the resources available to my maximum benefit.  on average a BA in psychology is useless if all you do in school is complete requirements you need to graduate...my experience involved multiple internships, teaching psy 100, designing research projects and conducting them under mentor-ship of professors who are well known in the field...hopefully getting my work published, i've taken grad school level courses, i'm in every honor society offered for psychology that's legit, i'm actively involved in assisting other undergrads with thier research...etc...basically your education is what you make of it.  i'm by no means a exceptional student intellectually, but i'm passionate about my education and search out resources that can be used to my benefit.  big schools like usc might have more resources, world class professors, programs with rich history of excellence and what not available...but the draw back is that they also have more competition among students for those resources.

we have a pretty decent marine bio program...but it depends on your focus within that is.  whatever is popular and gets the most attention gets the most funding and usually attracts bigger names.  uh is a research school, so if you're looking for practicum then you might want to go somewhere else.  ahh hand tired ask more q's if that's not enough.

Ekh: What Ryan says, but more of it. Attitude applies anywhere, not just in school. Parkour: Everybody's got strengths and weaknesses. You can sit on your couch watching pk vids, or you can train. You can hang out with your friends, or you can work out with your friends. Take advantage of your strengths, and try to reduce the weaknesses.

well I am all about learning. I don't care for a degree nor a profession, I am looking for a place to study, be in touch with the natural world, and be happy. I have been looking at Hawaii because it is such a naturally beautiful place. That why I thought it would be fit to study plants and animals and to learn more about life. But I guess I could say my expectations are not very big, I just want to learn and make friends. I have also been looking at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on college board and student review. But this doesn't portray the place I would think it would be. Also how often does it rain there?
Title: Re: The Real Crazy Talk!!
Post by: Gregg HIPK on February 11, 2010, 05:47:09 PM
When I was working in Hilo, it rained a little every evening. Sometimes a lot, for a short period of time. Hilo rainfall average is 130 inches a year at the coast, 200 upslope. Last March they had one day where they got almost 7 inches of water in 16 hours.

If you're not looking for a degree or profession, why do you want to study Marine Biology in a college/ university setting? [Just curious]. Hawaii is beautiful, no doubt about it.

If you find it easy to make new friends where you are now, you'll find it easy to make friends anywhere. Likewise, if you find it hard where you live now, you'll find it even more frustrating if you move here. The culture is different, lots of the local slang/ pidgin is way different, food... prices... It comes down to being friendly and respectful.

When I said "I don't care for a degree nor a profession" I really meant that my main reason for going to college is to learn, to me getting a degree isn't a good reason to go to college. Sure, it's fun to "stalk" people through the forums. I was following Ozzi earlier. I know Ryan's on the forum, sitting on the main "Hawaii" page doing nothing. Derek's reading "Talk Story".

You have to be incredibly bored to do that, tho. On HIpk forum we used to play a stupid game, where we tried to post on a topic if we saw someone else was posting on it. I think Johnny must have nailed me 30 or 40 times because of my text walls. :D

Don't ask how this belongs here, it's just random thoughts that come to mind... therefor spam. I just like to type/write my thoughts.

In my own belief Parkour and Freerunning are two different things but closely related, like rugby and football... And I'm not talking about the pads. It's hard to define this because of the community as a whole is split on what is what is what. I recently heard someone say Parkour is just the path but the movement is Freerunning. Okay the obvious fact he didn't have a clue should have put me off when I read his final words, meaning he had no idea even the use of the word Parkour, "...I've been Freerunning and Parkouring for the past two years!", and the fact it was written in broken "txt speak". But it still got me thinking, maybe by the fact I have trouble with people trolling Parkour... What ever it is I broke what he said down into a few parts, while fixing his speech and grammar.

"No Parkour is Freerunning with having a destination, for example point A to B. Like from your house to the mall and Freerunning there..."
The first thing that comes to mind is... What was Parkour before Freerunning then? Wouldn't everyone have been practicing Parkour because you almost always have a destination, even if it is not preplanned or decided. And since we did Freerun back then all it is is going from point A to B. Or maybe he's implying there was no Parkour until recently either witch way it makes no sense.

"This is Freerunning in witch there is no destination its just jumping over and off of objects..."
But what can you match as point A and point B? Seriously, I jumper over one thing and it puts me about three minutes closer to the cafe then everyone else. Would that be point A and B, or did I just Freerun one object? But I made it to my destination didn't I? I jump off the stair well to get around the students who crowd the second half. So I just jumped over something there for it was not Parkour... Or at least by this guys logic. But anything is point A and B, as simple as it may be.

But getting off the troll's comment, I believe Parkour is a practical and effective use of the movement while Freerunning shows use the beauty and grace of the same movement. When I see some one quickly transition and get to somewhere as quickly as possible and clear an object as such, sure I'm impressed but only as a idea of their speed. While likewise when someone does the same move slower and stronger, showing it's key beauty I'm am impressed by how it looks but not how it's used. So when I see flips normally there to show off how they can look, though once in a blue moon I see a flip used practically I see that as Parkour. So Freerunning and Parkour can't be defined like, "Oh Freerunning in only flips.", or, "All you do in Parkour is vault and get somewhere." They just are the same thing in different worlds.

I really love how people who have never once done either one find themselves to be "experts" on what's what. I had someone explain "what parkour was" to someone we were walking with after he asked me "You're into parkour, aren't you," and his explanation made me laugh and shake my head on the inside..he was so certain of his explanation and it wasn't even half of the idea of parkour itself.

If "work" is a straight line, and "play" is spirals and circles...
How does your brain look today?

Yesterday I purposely didn't do anything in a straight line at work. Either physically or mentally. I had a lot of fun, but didn't get much done.

b2c was posting about rage froobling fetch "BeshenSphere." I thought it looked funny, but I think he spammed every forum on the site. So I took off the one he posted here in Hawaii, and took my comment off one of the other ones.

Oh btw - I got LOADS of work done today. And some laundry at the same time.

Ooh. Not good. Does that prof have another class of same subject so you can take it? See if there's ANY way to take test.

Crazy talk isn't about spelling. It was set up for a place to send conversations that were interesting, but off-topic. Or to write your post in haiku, or limericks, or all in one breath.

There was a thread about naked free-running. It was stupid.

I know HIpk train in board shorts a lot [I do 60%]. Then I realized that most mainland bathing suits are those junky things with elastic waists that barely stay on in 1-2' shore pound.

The biggest problem I've had with board shorts is if the pocket is low on the leg. Then keys are distracting when I run.

Anyone else have issues with board shorts?

Advance warning to Mainland people:

I realize I mentioned "Crazy Talk" in the Socialize thread. We don't mind if you visit over here. Especially if you've ever been to Hawaii, or eaten spam musubi, or done a speed vault in slippahs. Or if you do all your posts in one breath or in haiku.

Just show some respek unless you want beef. ;D

Virtual beef = edit or delete your posts or threads, ban you from the forums for a couple hours, make it so you can't ever come on the forums between midnight and 6 am. Delete account. I don't even remember what all my superpowers are. ;D

I checked. Banning and deleting I have on the old HIpk forums.

Count the syllables

It didn't start out stupid, but like a lot of threads lately, it ended up that way.

Hello, my name is Frosty, and I am a "Mainland person". I have been a "Mainland person" for over 47 years, except for 10 days in Nov 2006.

Board shorts? Shore pound? I'm in Missouri, man, all we gotz is mud. (And a LOT of that at the moment!) Most of our trunks (bathing suits) do have some form of string in them, but it is usually fairly worthless. Things are different out there in HI. We can't go into Taco Bell without a shirt or shoes on here. Our Denny's all have glass in the windows. Out there you walk down the street and see dozens of people in really good shape. Here, it just isn't that way. The only people around here who arn't fat are 'some' of the contruction workers, and the few guys who are muscle heads. I'm not in the best shape, but I'm in sooo much better shape than most people my age here, that they all make fun of me when I say I need to lose some fat! (Because I'm skinnier than they are, and they are jealous.) When I was on Maui, I felt fat! But everyone was so friendly, it never bothered me at all.

So, do you mean wake boarding shorts? Or is it something else you are talking about? Gym shorts here barely stay on in a stiff breeze, so those don't work at all.

Very close, Brian. See? You're doing better already. Not bad, actually. If you had said "I would" instead of I'd, you would have got the 5-7-5. Right now you're 5-6-5

Brian, you got it. Nice try,
Michael, but your middle line has 11 syllables, not 7.

[Can't think of anything else I need to say, and still have enough breath to finish this, edit the spelling and pass out. Not in that order.]

I still use elementary clapping method of counting syllables
Writing = 2
Haikus = 2
isn't = 1
very = 1
easy = 1
At least when I clap.  ::) What are they really?

Brian, 10 is right. // I was oxygen deprived // Not counting clearly ;D
Michael, try clapping // on every syllable // not just the stressed ones.

Aim for poetry // Short sweet deep beautiful words // That fit the topic(s).

Frosty, you get it // Your brain thinks HIpk. // No need to worry ;D
Board shorts are surf shorts // Velcro fly, tie at waistband // I prefer unlined.
