Are tortillas any better for you than bread? Corn vs flour? (Trying to find a loophole, I love bread. :D)

About the same, maybe a little better. Thanks a lot for that, it was really enlightening.

I'd like to additionally thank you for the links to that site, I'll be using that site for other questions in the future. The gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for teaching me how to fish.

I would just like to add to this that sandwiches are generally no good for you.

Lunch meat, especially ham and turkey are about 60% processed meat, and the rest is water.

Water, with bread, is just asking for fat cells to take cover in the shelter we call our bodies.

I say stick with light lunches regardless. Salads and Fruits are my way to eat lunch.

Water actually slows absorption rates.  Nothing is wrong with sandwiches, if you get rid of the bread.

in my opinion, this is the order of carb sources from good to bad

1) Fresh Veggies
2) Fresh Fruits
3) Beans/Legumes
3) Fruit Juices (100% Juice)
4) Cooked Veggies
5) Cooked Fruits
6) Dried Fruits
7) Starchy vegetables (Potatoes, etc)
8) Grains (Breads, Pastas, etc)
9) Rice
10) Natural unrefined sugars
11) Refined sugars

I am sure I forgot some things, but this gives u a general idea.  I put grains and rice down there at the bottom with refined sugars.  Keep that in mind.  Stick to #s 1 2 and 3 and i estimate that u will be eating better than 90% of americans imho.

Bringing something up from along time ago, but why do you consider juice better than cooked veg and dried fruit? And why bread and pasta better than rice?

The rest is a good list for me.

Not sure why I said that.  I would probably put them below Dried Fruit.

NO way should fruit juices be above cooked veggies and fruits... fruit juices are basically all sugar. they should be near the bottom.

One phrase for you: Open-faced sandwiches. We ate them all the time when I lived in Germany this summer. Use one slice of bread instead of two. Even better, use a wrap or something.

this may have already been addressed (i only read 3 pages), but you keep saying one of the reasons why bread is bad is because it spikes your insulin.  i know many body builders who intentionally spike their insulin levels with cromiumpicolonate (sp?), honey, fruit, ect as a way to increase protein absorption.  since there is a decent amount of protein in a sandwich (at least the kinds i eat) why would this be a bad thing?

Not necessarily true.

In fact, proponents of Paleo will say that white bread is better than whole grain/wheat bread. I would tend to agree.

All bread, however, is bleh

I apologize for reviving this, but I've read through the whole topic and I feel I've learned a lot from this.
I, too, thought that the food pyramid was accurate, although I hardly followed it religiously.

I do enjoy bread, but only because it is very convenient for holding tuna and the like. Hardly something I can't live without.
I'll be sure to incorporate more fruits and nuts in my diet, but is there anything besides lettuce that serves as a good edible "plate" for food?
Don't just go running, go running with "style"

Recently I gave myself a one week challenge to cut back all sources of sugar.
Reading the labels I found whole wheat, white even some tortillas had about the same amount of sugar. Most of the breads that did have low sugar were pricey.
I finally found a few loaves of varying grains and makes that were reasonably priced. To tell you the truth they were tasty, and I enjoyed them better than white or brown breads, and weren't as bland as the low sugared tortillas.
So browse your bakery isle you may find something really good.

Remember read the labels!

Fruits and vegetables.  Lettuce, for example, is great for holding foods.

i was the same way when i first started to eat whole wheat bread as a kid. then i didn't have sandwhiches for a long time and this tiny party of my brain *serious about this* started to realize that i was not getting enegh grains. so it started to see the foods with the highst grain content as a treat. *power of the brain* it happened to one dude lost at sea, he started to eat fish eyes and fish liver  :P
