well you want to guide yourself into the roll and push yourself a bit out of it with your hands...to do this...you first determine which side you are gonna roll on (lets just say right for the purposes of explaining)

so to roll on your right side you stick your right arm out and turn your forearm so your thumb is facing you and your pinky is facing away. bring your forearm a bit inward and then give yourself a little push into the roll for some momentum. your arm shouldnt collapse that much and instead it should form a curve as you roll

make sure you tuck your head in and to the left a bit if doing a right sided roll

i hope this helped...if you have anymore questions just ask me

Read the entire thread I posted "Cant get my roll down". I had the exact same problem if your shoulder hurts. I'd post more now but I'm typing on my ipod. I'll try to help later...

Don't learn the roll off of jumps. If you just go out and jump off stuff, you're putting more risk out then if you learn the roll and then do the jumps. Check out Ozzy's tutorial on rolls. My shoulder hurt because I was going too slow and not using my hands to get up on the back of my shoulder, so I landed on the top almost.

Um, if you feel pain your roll is most likely bad... I think his tutorial is in the tutorials section of the site. Post a youtube video and embed it in this thread, it'll be easier to help you.

One of those is sure to help. Also, don't start off learning your rolls from jumps. A free-standing, or squatting position is a good way to learn the roll.

what goes up must come down... just make sure you can roll before you jump off of that 3 story building...

Something that has worked good for me in the past in learning the basic roll is to place a mat of cardboard on cement. Just enough of a section to roll on without running out of space. Then stand on a stool about 1-2 feet in the air just enough so that you get SOME downward force when you impact the ground and jump off off that in a forward motion (Make double sure that the stool is not going to shoot out from under you when you jump forward though :P ). When you land analyze what part of you hurts on the landing. The cardboard will take the bite of hitting the concrete out, but it will still let you know if you mess up :P Good luck I hope this helps you out!
