« on: March 15, 2008, 08:07:58 AM »
Everytime I try to roll, I just hit the top of my head. How should I do it? *fail*  :-[ :-[ :-[ :'(

P.S. If this is the wrong place, sorry. D:

There's a ton of posts on this, have you tried reading some of them? They're very informative. If you haven't yet, try checking out the tutorials section of the APK site.
As for hitting your head, tuck it in more and make sure you aren't rolling straight, this isn't a somersault. Good luck.

It definitely helped, thanks. I'm kind of doing it funky, but i've only got about 3-4 feet of space to do it. So i'm still working on it.

Any more tips, people?

Two tips I often give beginner rollers are:

1) For the arm you are about to roll over: Think about pointing your thumb at your bellybutton. This sets up  a slight arc along the outside of your arm and hopefully prevents you from trying to plant your hand.

2) For your head...tuck your chin towards the opposite shoulder (away from the shoulder you are rolling over)

c) Stay active: strong arm, tight ball. Don't just flop over.

It's as easy as 1-2-c!  ;D

Yes, Aikido for about two years (and about two years lapsed...)

I think Ukemi is great practice for Parkour rolls  :)

Just remember we're all a little different, so if you have to tuck your head more or less, or in a slightly different way, then okay. If it keeps you from hitting it, you've gotten the job done

Yea it really has helped...I did judo for about 4 years but I learned Ukemi before that in karate because my dad would help teach karate even though he did judo and he would teach us all ukemi

You should try to come in at more of an angle if you are hitting your head down on the ground. If you are already coming in at enough of an angle, Try tucking your head toward your armpit a little more and this should fix the problem. Good luck!
