Why Parkour has a bad rap
« on: February 16, 2006, 12:39:13 PM »
Is this why parkour is labeled as being "extreme" and "highly dangerous"? I understand that the majority of us has had their bumps, lumps, and buises. That comes with any contact sport/art/discipline,  but is it the untrained fools who do things beyond their level of training (if they have trained at all that is) and think pk is just about doing "crazy stuff"

The reason that parkour is not an extreme sports is because it takes brains! :o  I really hate it when stupid people go out and attempt to do some huge gap or something and end up getting hurt.  I really don't feel sorry for those type of people, it's their own fault for not thinking.  One of the biggest aspects of parkour is to "know your own limits" that cannot be emphasized enough.  If you are ever going to attempt something that you haven't tried before, do it at the gym.  That way when you fall on your head youy most likely wont die.  Head+Cement=Death  Now I'm not saying that some of the other "extreme sports" like skateboarding or motocross don't require skill, but you can take bigger risks in those since you wear a helmet and pads.  Now I don't know about you guys, but I really don't want to have to do pk with a helmet on :P, so please think before you attempt anything new.  I find that that is the best way to minimize injury.  Now go have fun ;)

The category was "Funny" and the description was "Kid faceplants while jumping between rooftops."  I didn't look too deep into the site, but I didn't see any mention of Parkour on that page.  Just looks like kids being stupid to me.

I go to that site sometimes. If you search free-running then it gives you about 5 videos i think. Nothing special.

OOOWwwww, that didn't make me laugh, it made me wince.
As long as it doesn't have any reference to Pk then I don't really mind (except for their sake).

Well all the first one is....is just stupid kids...I wish he fell off into a pit of marshmellow..evil marshmellows.  The other one was because he had too much of a momentum with his legs + not good enough of a grip + inexperience, he thought he could go outside..jump off the ledge, and all would be okay once he grabbed it.. WRONG.  I know cuz I have tried that...and the same thing happened to me...I was maybe a little lower than him, and caught myself with my hands.  But this isnt a reason parkour gets a bad rap, its society and their look on skateboarders and w/e.  This is the problem with my city, when trying to parkour...you cant, they look at us all wrong after skateboarders and skaters were street skating and "wrecking" everything.

Deft, I don't think Parkour DOES have a bad rap, does it??

I think it will get one if people keep posting videos of jackass idiots doing stupid stuff on Parkour sites and asking why Parkour has a bad rap.

Ahahahah

I love how in that first "run" he tries to jump for a rafter that he soooo obviously can't reach.

ahahahahahahahaha, I'm sorry, I'm such a terrible person for laughing at that, but I was almost in tears when I first looked at it.
