Agreed. Protein is the building blocks of muscles.

Well, you also have to have a sufficient hypertrophy (muscle building) stimulus as well as a generally hypercaloric diet.

My buddy the body builder recommends cutting out foods that are anti-inflamatory when trying to gain muscle mass, such as foods that are high in omega-3(such as fish, nuts), and rather eating foods that are inflammatory.  I can't remember a lot of the specific foods he mentioned, but I do remember potatoes.  He suggests plenty of carbs after a workout to feed growing muscles.  And yeah, obviously plenty of protein.

I have no idea if this is good advice, but I do know the boy is ripped and strong as an ox..... so.... I try not to argue with results.

Why would you cut out essential fats like omega fatty acids that basically help build/repair your brain if you're growing (everyone until 25 yrs old)? That's not to mention good fats (HDL levels and such) which omegas also help increase (and decrease LDL).

The simple fact of the matter is you DON'T want inflammatory responses because inflamation and swelling take your body energy and time to repair which slows down hypertrophy.

Basically the guy is wrong. If he's ripped and strong it's not cause of quality nutrition (though could be because of the quantity and workout routine).

Yes I must apologize as well because you're friend may be big and bulky.. but he doesn't sound like the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Hypercaloric is a term for a diet that has an abundance of calories; more than needed for the average maintenance of your body.

Hypertrophy, (I'm not too knowledgeable about to the exact specifics of this) but is your muscle breaking down from training and the body repairing it, making it bigger.

Google is a big help when trying to figure out what things are. For single words, you can even just type in (without quotes) "define: hypertrophy" and it'll give you a bunch of definitions.
