the David Belle Demo ("Pretty much all of it")
« on: October 09, 2007, 05:58:06 PM »
Jonnyo, Hoff and I made it to New YOrk on Sunday. It was on of the greatest days ever. Only problem was it was hard to get seats so the camera angle was pretty hard, also we had some camera diffuculties (rewinding tape and needing new film) so some stuff gets cut but...

The interview and questions (all with david belle):
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1307962262323600312

The parkour:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-220238635155977153

Some of its pretty long but its the man himself.

By the way best home footage ever!

Thanks for posting this!

Man... I should be his interpreter. :)
She followed slowly, taking a long time,
as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

It would have been really good if we could have played around with those obstacles before the demo in order to get the feel for them. That would have given everyone a chance to explore the possibilities of different move combinations on them before actually performing in front of a large audience with cameras everywhere. The funny thing was how many skilled people were there, yet you can't tell that from the video footage.

That interviewer was TERRIBLE. He continually made statements of questions. (For instance, "So, your father was a firefighter?") Its just a cop-out because he didn't do enough research to ask good questions.

Yes he definitely was. I am only like 3 minutes in, and I already am thinking about skipping the interview and going to the other vid, which is prolly a lot better.

If I am not mistaken, that interviewer was Alec Wilkinson who wrote the huge parkour article in the New Yorker last spring. He is very intelligent and insightful so if the interview was poor, it was due to the fact that he already knew the answers to every question he could ask and did a poor job of playing "dumb".

Yeah the New Yorker article is great. I believe that is what he was reading from at the beginning. IMO that article is one of the best introductions to parkour that the general public can have. I refer people to it often.

I think part of it was simply the difficulty of coordinating between the interviewer, David, and his interpreter. I am very curious as to who did the interpreting, to be honest. It's what I used to do before I went into teaching, and I've lost touch with that community quite a bit, so I have a curiosity about that.

I would have loved to have been there. Listening to his responses in French: wow. I felt like I trained a lifetime just listening to him talk!

Pleeeease tell me they saved that set...and that they're going to keep it up until...well, until I can get out to New York....

There was some really good stuff in there :) great kongs to cats, some kongs to speeds (over the central box/rail thing) and a lot of precision practice, it looks like.

And who said PK couldn't be a spectator sport? :) now we just need a stadium.

Further supporting Demon and Muse, here is the link to the article(s) in the New Yorker. The latest one is not there yet. Everyone should read these.

Watching the interview now...the translator sounds like she's translating from English, into Spanish, into French, then into Russian, then back into English...she just can't seem to speak either language well enough :( and she didn't know the word for "vault," I bet Muse would have (Pop quiz, Muse!!!)

The reporter did seem a bit flustered, but I bet he's never had to worry about such a bad translator...or so it would seem. It's not really helpful for the audience to hear a sketchy translation, either.

"Because he was not so good at school....but school is good!" It seems that one of the PAPK team members knows French (great job, man!)

Um....a guy with a gun? WTF m8!?!?!

Où est-ce que vous avez trouver cette traducteuse terrible, ça c'est ma question...

traducteuse=translator (f)

And, one of the PAPK guys (who were filming) asked a question in French, which is good :)

just curious, from anyone who was there. How big were those presicions that David Belle was performing across the tops of the castle like structures?

They look massive on the video.

They were massive. NO other person could do it. Failure meant death, basically.

I belive leon did it once.
But david was hitting them up all over after he got comfortable.  Like david said "Its not a difficult jump Ive gone further, but its dangerous"
It was interesting how he took a step into the prescion and jumped it with both legs without hesitation, I remember hearing that the french train things for real situations, and thats why he runs into the prescion like that."
oyeah it was huge, around 10 ft I would guess

I think you are right about Leon, and if I remember correctly, he was the first person to do it. lawl!

Haha its funny you mention that, i was wondering were leon was, most of the time in this vid. you'd see him for a second then he'd dart off somewhere lol.

But i figured Leon would probably try that since he's a precision BEAST.

The gap was at least twice David's body height so at least 11 feet.

Nobody knows French in PAPK it was somebody right next to the camera.
