How about some Rope Skipping?
« on: January 06, 2006, 04:52:25 AM »
It's a very simple piece of equipment and definitely helps jump / response.

And besides, I suck at it and would like to get better  ;D

When I trained MMA (before Freestyle Parkour took over my world) we had to do several rounds of jump rope before we did anything. At first I hated it but I quickly saw the benefits. Now I use it every time before I do conventional exercises like pushups, situps, and bag work. It builds insane cardio abilities and it is better to do weights/ hard training when the heart is already pumping good.
I reccomend using 2 or 3 minute rounds. (2 minutes is what amateur boxing & kickboxing rounds are, 3 is what the pros use so we went by those.) I do 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest in between. I usually do 4 rounds of that. ( my first rounds slow the others as fast as I am comfortable with.) Then I finish it off with a burnout round where I go for as long as possible.
After you become comfortable with jumping for long periods without stopping you can focus on things like working fancy footwork and trying several rhythms.
I bought the cheapest plastic jump rope from Academy sports and outdoors for around 2 bucks and it has lasted me over 2 years.
Very good idea M2. ;)

Yep, I tend to incorporate double-unders regularly frequently, which is why I think it's funny that you bring this up ;) Seems most people have a hard time finding a jump-rope (you know, since they're so exhorbitantly expensive and all...) so I got a lot of substitutions when I had it on the blog (I like the burpee sub...it punishes those too lazy to go get a rope ;)

Just because I like you so much, and I know I'll be in Jersey to see you suffer, we'll have a jump-rope workout tomorrow :D

Sounds like a great idea,  expect to see some improvement in your vertical jump and general quickness.  btw, is a double under letting the rope revolve twice your in the air?

Get with the flow...

Does anyone do tripples?  I have been working my jump ropping skills lately and I do double, double, double, tripple.  I dont always do it and when I started out I couldnt even stand...I would just land and fall.  Now I have it to where I am straight up but I cant keep going yet.

Oh and what about crossovers...I dont know what they are called...but anyone do doubles of those?

Well, I'm gonna have to go out and pick up a jump rope now.  I've never thought of it as a very good workout before, but I've been proven wrong.  Don't ya think it would be kinda cool to incorporate a jump rope into a gainer? :D  Well that was just a pointless thought, you would proabably kill yourself if you tried it ;)

i never really like jump rope, because i was forced to do it early in the morning in elementary school every day for the "jump for heart" thing that my school was obsessed with. I did get pretty good at it though, well at least i was good in 7th grade (last time i jumpe roped) and could do doubles and cross overs and all that jazz. I think i am going to take it up again with a new positive attitude towards it. :)

OK, so the highlight of this article and the ensuing video isn't exactly Ross' rope-skipping prowess, but it's good enough to put me to shame, along with his 80lb weighted roll-outs, 110lb one-arm snatches, etc. etc. etc....the list could go on :p

Why is that exactly, and why in god's name would you care?  ::)

As for places to find jump ropes online, this seems like a nice place to start: Jump Ropes
