The spammers problem.
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:38:20 AM »
While reporting all of the recent spam posts I noticed that they all have the same behavior. They post in general fitness, make only one post, have one link in their sig, that leads to the product and they always leave a P.S. with an apology for subforum selection. Isn't there any way to filter these bots out? Like limiting general fitness to 2+ post members or something like that?

I'll speak with the admin about this idea.

I don't know if it will work. There is a chance that the bot is a dumb bot (I suppose it is) and will get confused, because it doesn't have rights to post in Fitness. But there is the chance that it will adapt and will post in another section. Anyway I think it's worth trying :)

That's not a bad idea. Out of curiosity, what anti-bot security stuff (ABSS, it's a technical term :P) do we already have?

I think that this forum should actually be archived and a new one started. Or at least this one needs updated

At least remove the 20 seconds between reports. The forum is raided by multiple bots, spamming multiple posts, some of them russian. I'm not going to report all of these with this waiting time.

I finally got some free time so I'm doing my best to clean out the massive amount of spam. I'll see if we can get a new forum or possibly a captcha to sign up/post. There's only so much the admin can modify/do as we are utilizing simple machine forums instead our own creation.

My apologies for the inactivity.

That's why I don't like SMF. I can't suggest you to pay for vBulletin, but of all free forum systems phpBB3 is the best IMO.

I hope that posting so much on that topic, doesn't become annoying. :) I did a google search on what methods are there to prevent spam on an SMF forum and what I found is this. It allows recaptcha to be used for registration, instead of the original SMF captcha. Also you could add a restriction for posting links. Not allowing it for users with under like... 5 posts should work. And these coombined with a more niche registration question like "Complete the traceur name" And you have "David ______", "______ Foucan", "_______ La ______" and so on, could provide a pretty reliable defense.

Once again, I'm sorry if I become too annoying.
