Where is Everyone?
« on: June 01, 2014, 11:07:32 PM »
A few years ago, I came onto these forums almost daily. They were thriving. I could be gone for an hour and come back to pages of new unread posts. What happened? These forums seem dead now. I miss the old feeling of the community being active and close knit. What happened to everybody?

I have no idea what happened earlier in the forum history but I know about the last year or two. The time I lurked before I joined and soon after it was getting about a two page of new posts, it was still somewhat active and most people there had been training for a while. Activity would stall in winter when people couldn't train as much,  less people came back after. It was an accumulative effect, the less people there were the more that would leave. There was also the problem of spam and it hit at the worst time. It was when mods weren't on often sorry all you could do is report them. The amount of spam at times was rediculous. After a while M2 and the rare moderator would clear up the reported  ones every now and then. M2 made me and Russel mods so that isn't a problem now. I think one of the biggest reasons the experience traceurs left is because they were tired of the same questions, same debates, and the same responses.
That's as much as I can say this morning, on my phone,  before work. Hopefully Dick will say a few things.

I can't give a very good answer because I don't really know. I think a lot of people just moved on like you did but never came back. Like Nick said part of the problem is that it probably just got old. There are only so many times you can have the same discussions. Things like "parkour vs. free running" and endless threads about the same techniques probably drove away helpful members.

Another guess I have is that back a few years ago this was probably one of the only places you could talk to other traceurs. Now everybody has facebook groups, twitter, and a lot of people train with groups in their area so they don't have the need for a forum anymore.

I can tell you a few of the mods got busy with other projects. M2 I'm sure is a busy man. Steve Low now runs the website eatmoveimprove, wrote the book Overcoming Gravity, and is extremely active on the subreddit of the same name. Chris Salvato similarly is a part of eatmoveimprove and has done his own work, a lot of it seemingly focused on handstand training. The rest probably also got busy with other things and this stopped mattering.

Lately this site has been back and forth between absolutely dead for a week or two at a time, to a few spikes in interest every now and then. Me and Nick try to stay really active to answer questions so people don't leave, but a lot of people literally post one topic, don't respond in it, and never come back.

I expected the turnover drop from winters. I'm a little surprised that some of the more die hards from back then left when they got busy. But it's good to hear that they went on to do bigger and better things. I'll be sticking around. You can hunt me down and chew me out if I don't. I hope we can see the forums come back to life. This has, in my opinion, always been the best community for parkour throughout America.

I don't see why no one on the apk Facebook page doesn't just say"Hey come make an account on the apk forums and get involved"

To be honest I don't even follow the APK facebook page..kinda forgot there was one.

I don't think the forums are a big priority for them right now. There are only 2-3 moderators for the entire forum still active and there's no way they could handle the old levels of activity, especially since they're volunteers.

Not dead. We still get new people, still have some good discussions, and the people who are active on here are a pretty good community and support each other.

There's always the possibility for it to grow. And if nothing else there's a ton of great resources here.

I'm pretty new, but from what I gather, is that the people that still come back and check the forums out, are the people that care about the community and especially in helping them. I mean that's why I came here, to find people that I can help :)

Not saying that we NEED this and I know this is whats happening, is the energy we put into the topics and discussion will create a stronger and more reliable community which may attract people back (if you really want them back haha ;))

Sorry, if I intruded but I thought my 2 cents would at least make some feel good :P

I can't speak for the majority of those who haven't been active. But over the last couple of years, injuries and life in general got in the way and I just forgot about it. But I'm looking at getting back into training, so I thought I would come back and get a little bit involved again, as much as I can.

Actually people seem to be coming back to the forums ;D.
It makes me happy to see more people starting to post and what not even though I've been active only about 6 months.
