Parkour has come so far!
« on: December 18, 2011, 09:17:46 AM »
Parkour has come so far over the years! People are doing things now with great ease that no one thought was possible just a few years back. The videos are looking as if Steven Spielburg or George Lucas produced and directed them. There are thousands of people who are making a living off of what they love. Not only do they get to do what they love every day, they get to travel around the world to see new places and meet new people. Almost anywhere one can find at least one person who does parkour. Every single person that I have met through parkour were so nice and accepting - there is almost no room negativity.

I am truly honored to be a part of this community.

Half the people I knew trained in 2007 when I started that went and pushed the limits have ligament issues and arthritis now.
The other half quit training altogether.

The amount of people I know (not even personally) that make a living off of the PK/FR community is two. That would be Mark because of APK and his Gym and Ez Styla because of UFF. All the athletes I know of have other jobs in addition.

Where did you get these facts?
Aren't we all running?

By the term "making a living" I meant that people were earning money for doing parkour.

Unfortunately, that's not making a living. :\

But there are gyms that are making it although how well we shall see... APK, Apex, PK Visions, Urban Evolution, ...

Yeah, and the thousands who travel around the world are at most actually a few dozen. Probably just most of the big name people in WFPF or UFF like Livewire, Ilabaca, etc., but I'm not even sure about that. Gym owners teaching parkour are probably doing pretty well though, but they're staying in one place :P

"Popularity" wise.. I think it's come a long way..

"Intelligence" among the community... eh, not so much.

In addition to Kyle's post, I've seen a ton of people drop off and disappear over the years as well, but there are also many I know who do actually make a living out of it.. I guess that's because we're from LA/hollywood. :P Unfortunately at the same time, I fear a lot of them will have joint issues down the road. :/

They don't really take much time to condition outside of movement.. they figure the movement itself is adequate enough to keep them strong. I MIGHT agree to a certain extent... if they progressed a lot slower than they do, but since they do crazy shit... stuff they aren't totally ready for physically, it will likely play a part in their downfall, making it hard for them to make a living out of it in the long run. :/

Alex, I have been training for about 5 years now and I'm am still just as inspired and excited about Parkour and the Parkour community as the day I started:)

Just being real. This isn't skateboarding.

It may not be, but why can't it be one day:)
This post was based off of my personal gatherings. Enjoy:)

by popularity the WORD parkour has grown a lot
but the majority of people don't actually know about parkour

The public definition of parkour, is when someone who jumps off buildings, runs up walls, and does crazy flips.

I like Tricking and Free Running, i don't think i actually do parkour, because i do it for fun and self expression, which would change the term to free running.

Yep. After slowly creeping away from the Parkour scene, I noticed a rapid growth in popularity. Good or bad, I don't know, but I would think mostly the above. Who knows though, we might have helped people as far as physical and mental health goes :)

I thought it was "so much hate".

Apparently it does not mean what I think it means.
