Potatoes, good? bad?
« on: February 16, 2011, 06:39:03 PM »
How bad are potatoes? On one hand, they're like pure starch, on the other, they're clearly a real food. It does have a high glycemic index though.

Also, googling the glycemic index of potatoes showed me that ice cream has a fairly low GI. Huh.

I find it hard to give up potatoes. I love that shit. :(

They're fine.

Real foods = good

Some of the native people groups from like Chile or something get 70-80% kcals from potatoes which is high amount of carbs but virtually no CVD, diabetes, etc.

I wouldn't go overboard with such things though. Sweet potatoes are awesome.

Now if you eat potatoes with juices and other made made sugary stuff I would be suspicious.

What would be the justification for it's goodness though?

Well, I just want to know what is the difference between eating a cooked potato and say.. white bread, in terms of insulin spikes and all those stuff.

yea we all know how awesome sweet potatoes are..

As you may know they're not exactly Paleo because of some of the anti-nutrients in them.

The difference between bread and potatoes is the processing. When you process stuff you eliminate a lot of teh vitamins (they re-add stuff though) and there's just something about the body that absorbs vitamins better from real foods as opposed to multivitamins and vitamins added to processed foods.

Addtionally, bread is generally made from grains whcih are terrible for you because of other said reasons.

I've certainly noticed I can have potatoes in my diet and be fine.  I guess making sure they don't overwhelm the diet is important...  But as Steven said, there's people who eat mostly potatoes are perfectly healthy.

I would argue cooking the potato is good, while it may remove some vitamin content...  It does help break down glycoalkaloids.

The more I see through practical usage and some review by respected people in the field all conclude that the glycemic index, when it all comes down to it, is one big piece of ass.

That is to say forget about it and look at the diet holistically and sensibly. Potatoes aren't a huge deal, especially depending on what you might have in their place.

Purple yam.

When it comes to starchy carbs, I'd rather get the energy from food sources like these (potatoes and yams) than breads or other grains.

Those yams are amazing! I officially have a fascination with them. I tested them out yesterday. Baked them like I would a sweet potato. They're flakier, about the same sweetness, and (IMO) has a wonderful texture! It's almost like you're eating cake a delicious purple cake. Also, they don't become mush like sweet potatoes do when you bake them too long. Mush isn't good.

Anyone has more creative/delicious ideas for those purple yams?

Potato chips are cooked in seed/vegetable oils.

That should be enough to tell you that vegetable/seed oils are garbage

Olive oil goes rancid at frying temperatures... I posted a link with information about all different kinds of healthy oils, for all different temperatures of frying....here it is again...
