Are flashy moves NEEDED?
« on: November 28, 2010, 05:11:59 PM »
soo....my friends and I really only know basic stuff, we can get from just about any place to any other place using the techniques we already know, but idk how to say this....i almost wanna ask; parkour is parkour as long as you can get from one place to another by just using your body, so you can be a traceur without pulling backflips and frontflips over rails, cause that just seems like a waste of time to me ?

If you think flips and the like are unnecessary to your movement, that's cool. If you want to try a flip or two, s'all good. If you want to try a spin, maybe put some flair into a vault, thats fine.

Do what you wish. Movement is movement, how it manifests in your body is different than mine.

Yes.  You CAN be a traceur without doing flips.

BUT...

If you train long enough, it will be easy for you to learn some flashy moves.... It's kind of inevitable to do them because, after all, you're just having fun.  And those kinds of moves are fun!

YESSSSS FLASHY MOVES ARE NEEDED!!!!
if you want to pick up chicks you gotta be able to cork son!
your rep can go from 'that guy that jumps over stuff' to 'that badass flipping off the walls ignoring that gravity exists".
Flips become fun once you are good at them, Tricking becomes fun when you land your first __________ s/t ____________, at least in my case tricking became 100x more motivating to do once i landed that first Btwist s/t gainer flash.
ALSO..... if you want any fun jobs involving pk, flashy flips are usually what people look for first. some people saw my youtube video, they used me as an actor for a film contest, and my flips won us $2,500 a ps3 and a copy of assassins creed 2. That wasn't a job for me, i was just having fun, i was going to be freerunning all day anyways.
I like Tricking and Free Running, i don't think i actually do parkour, because i do it for fun and self expression, which would change the term to free running.

My opinion on flips:
It's a good way to let people know you're not running from something/someone.

Do whatever feels right to you and makes you happy, as long as you do your best to be controlled with your movement and not kill yourself in the process of doing Parkour you'll be fine lol.

They're nice to have in your arsenal when you're training in the city, because if a police officer pulls up to watch you you can just bust a flip and they're like "Oooohhhhkay it's parkour gotcha."

The line between freerunning and parkour is minimal. There is no requirement to be a traceur. You can call yourself a traceur, or a freerunner. Trickers are a little different, but not by a ton.

I like traceur, cause it sounds professional.

Seriously.
Rely on yourself. Rely on your body. Rely on your training, instincts, and heart. Everything else is a crutch.

Meh. Hasn't escalated enough to be a troll. Maybe. Either way, this thread will be of use to some newcomer, so it works out either way ;)

Flashy Moves are the closest thing to having super powers,
do you want super powers?

From what I understand many would argue that flashy moves is what differentiates Parkour from Freerunning. Not really needed for Parkour but esssential for freerunning
