Teaching myself German
« on: August 15, 2010, 08:17:54 PM »
[This is meant to be a fun topic]

Soo... I'm teaching myself German, so far only using online sources. I also convinced my bro to start learning as well so we can converse.

I want to introduce another language though. I've read some stuff about learning multiple language at the same time, but has anyone here been successful at it?

All I can think of it is that it'll just take time and focus. I've already gotten pretty good into Spanish from high-school classes, but those were way to easy and I definitely won't want to take classes again. I tend to be able to remember things with minimal effort.

Anyway, I also found a sick sequence of videos where they go around talking to real Germans with the type of stuff that you might learn in a class, so hopefully that could act as some sort of immersion-type experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NXDM9XXhQ4 (first one)

I can't decide what other language to add in though. I could finish up my Spanish, or I could do it World War style.... use English to conquer German, German to conquer French, English to conquer Japanese... though I want to fit Italian in there somewhere.

Italian

Old school Italian is where it's at.

Sure, but the point initially is to be able to converse if I were to go to the country. After that, I'll take on whatever else I feel like.

Good point... ^_^

I still think it'd be legit, and cement my German skills to learn French IN German. I'm not sure how many programs exist here to do that.

As far as computer programs go though, I found something called Instant Immersion which seems to be quite similar to Rosetta Stone but
$199930059 cheaper. Reviews speak nicely of it, I'd probably go that way when the time comes.

I need some more votes! Haha...

I'm kinda liking French and Italian right now. I'll definitely refresh my Spanish simultaneously. German is going really well (I actually started like a month ago btw, not yesterday :P)

EDIT: It may just be a good strategic move to start on Italian next, as it's a base language that might make Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc easier to learn. (Right?)

Ultimate goal: become Jason Bourne. :P
