Tim, thanks for the suggestions. I think that making viable suggestions (which a bunch of people have) is a good start, the thing that will make a real difference is turning those ideas into focused actions.

Someone also mentioned something that I *almost* forgot - if we can reach these traceurs we need to be polite. I agree in principle anyway ...

So, please keep the ideas coming, I will help to organize these ideas into actions, and then we can all act together to make sure that our voice is heard loud and clear.

I have tried to reach trytostop.org before without success - I offered them free advertising on APK - it is discouraging that they didn't jump at the chance. I will reach out to them again monday.

*** Email just sent to anti-smoking.org, tobaccofree.org and notobacco.org contact ***

Hi,
My name is Mark Toorock. I run a website which gets a considerable amount of traffic (100K+ / month viewers) mostly male teens to 25's.

I'd like to offer advertising space at no cost to you, all you need to do is provide a banner ad and I will place it on my site, free of charge.

Parkour is an activity which fosters healthy living, respect for one's self and one's environment. American Parkour is the world's leading website for the Parkour and Freerunning communities.

Our community has recently been outraged by an act of despicable contempt, a cigarette company in China has sponsored a Parkour Tour.

We are working on creating efforts for the parkour community to speak out about this, and I would like to partner with as many anti-tobacco organizations as possible to help the fight against tobacco.

Please feel free to contact me at any time and let me know how we can help, and please consider my offer for free ad space.

Thanks!
M2

No, they make it crash and burn. It's the other fantastic people that make the world go round. ;)

That's exactly what we need to be. If the entire world-wide parkour community wakes up to this, I hope no corporation would even be able to pull this off again... based on that, one course of action everyone can take right now is simply to put this on Facebook and everywhere else you can, expressing in mature language why this is not acceptable.

I'm fairly confident that even though the pull of money is quite strong, the peer pressure of the entire world of traceurs will be much stronger. :)

if you have a sailor mouth like me i should clarify. he means it sounds mature, he does not mean it should be full of "mature" words.

Thew most amazing thing just happened to me. I just spoke to Patrick Reynolds, grandson of RJ Reynolds. He leads a national anti-smoking campaign. American Parkour will create and run a banner ad for his campaign free of charge starting hopefully as soon as Monday.

Fantastic, M2.

This really is disgusting. It's such a blatant marketing strategy towards that male teen-mid 20s demographic with a parkour tour. So hypocritical. Traceurs shouldn't sell out. I think by definition we all have a good sense of honor.

Guys, Patrick is the man, think of what he has given up - probably a multi-million dollar dynasty - more than any of us can imagine - it is one thing to talk the talk, it is another to walk the walk. This is what parkour is all about - achieving goals, reality, action. He is doing what is right instead of what certainly would have been easy.

"Hi Mark,

Glad we spoke, and thank you for the link to our site from your website.

Hopefully we will stop some teens from starting, and offer support to those who want to quit.

The Chinese tobacco company's sponsorship of the Parkour event shows that they have little regard for the health of teens. It looks like they are going after teens, because of course those are the only new smokers they can recruit. They know well that after the age of 19, almost no one starts smoking. And teens have no clue how addictive it is. 90% of all smokers get addicted before reaching age 19, and once hooked, they are unable to quit for an average of 17 years.

Good luck with your campaign and all success.

Patrick"
