Handstand Idea!
« on: October 18, 2006, 07:21:42 PM »
Is it possible to start a handstand from a crouched postion.  I am trying to work on being able to do that but I can't get my legs up.

I start out with my hands inbetween my knees and I press my feet off the ground.  When I get my feet off the ground I slowly rotate my head towards the floor and I try to press up and "kick" my legs up into the air, if yall get what I mean.

Thanks for any suggestions

J

I think it is definately possible.  I probably couldn't do it because I suck at any form of handstand press-up but I imagine if you attempt it like a normal handstand press-up you could get it down with some practice.  If you haven't seen it check out the tutorial for press-ups, maybe it will help you

Just remember with the human body there is almost nothing impossible.  Only more ways to make things possible.

I still dont know exactly what you said...but it seems very possible...explain it some more...because I am pretty sure that I can do it.

Just takes a lot of core strength.

Matt, you just start in a crouched position with your elbows bent but locked with your knees.  Then you press up to get your feet off of the ground.  When you do that you start to tilt your head forward and get your legs up so that you are in the handstand postition.  I can get everything except for the legs going up part.

If yall could help me out a bit I would appreciate it.

Thanks

I can start a handstand from a crouchedposition better than just going straight into it.  Start out with a frogstand.. tuck planche... lower your head a bit... raise your legs.  Then do a push-up.  I find it SO much easier than going straight into it...  Cause if I do the latter, i fall.  This way takes much more muscle... but when you compensate muscle for balance... it works out pretty well.

ok...so its like a bent arm bent leg press.  Auh...humm...takes some strength...try it with straight legs and arms first...might be easier.  Then try it bent.

I think that it might be easier than a staight leg handstand press for me.  Maybe it's because my legs are freakishly long and the fact that I can't do a handstand press to save my life.

just balance against the wall or with a spotter and do negatives(slowly lower yourself to the ground) then stand up and kick back into a hand stand un till you can do a hand stand push up. LATHER, RINSE, REPEAT.

I can do handstand pushups just fine, just not a handstand press.

A handstand press is hard.  It takes a lot of work and TECHNIQUE.  What you need to do is get in a wide leg straddle(not to wide) then put your hands down in the middle.  Do this to were your head is about 1 foot away from the wall.  Tuck your head and and lean your shoulders against the wall.  This is the easiest way to learn a press, to do it against a wall.  Change position against the wall as needed.
Remember it needs to be a REALLY good lean forward.

One thing Mathew didn't mention, the press happens when you can get your hips above your shoulders. This takes some flexibility, as you can't really have a rounded back and make this happen. It also helps to work low-ab strength with movements like the hollow-rock, L-sit and Leg lifts.
