Help me with my groceries + brushing up on my diet
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:43:13 AM »
Hey all! I have a couple of things I would like to ask so I am just going to separate each question :)

1.) I currently am living with one of my buddies since I was kicked out of my house. I also buy my own groceries. I'm 135lb and 5' 8". I'm not entirely sure if that's considered overweight or not (some online resource said so, but I don't trust it all that much) but I'm still trying to gain some weight so I can put on some muscle mass as well. When I go shopping I'm not entirely sure what I should buy. I buy things like tuna and fish sticks but the only thing that I can think of that will help me is fish so I just play it safe and buy all types of that. Unfortunately, I work part time and my budget is kinda low. To be honest an $80 dollar budget a month is what I can afford because I have other payments. If I continue to gain more hours I can spend more, but as of now I can't see that happening. Do you guys have any suggestions on some items I should be purchasing that are healthy enough and cheap enough?

2.) I have never tried oatmeal in my life until a week ago. I absolutely LOVE IT! I eat it at least 2 times a day, and it also being my breakfast! Yesterday the only thing I was able to eat was oatmeal for breakfast and dinner! Just out of curiosity, should I slow down on the oatmeal or what? I see the positives to it but I'm not sure how much I should incorporate it into my diet.

3.)The last thing is my diet pretty much. I was wanting to post a list of what my normal day is like and see if you guys could help clean it up for me and add some more suggestions! Thanks!

Breakfast
-2 bags of instant oatmeal + apple

Lunch
-Fish sticks, chicken fingers, or something along those lines

Dinner
(Usually I am at work during this time) 3 grilled fish fillets + tons of veggies

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Uhhhh, can you raise your budget at least a little bit?

6 eggs for breakfast at ~2.00 per dozen for 30 days = 30 bucks
10 gallons of whole milk at ~2.50 per (can get on sale as low as 2.00) = 25 bucks
10 lbs of meat (1/3 lbs meat per day) at anywhere from like 3-4 bucks (can be lower depending on quality) is 30 or so bucks
Then add in $15 bucks worth of fruits & veggies

= ~$100

Way healthier and likely many more kcals that the above... assuming you are tolerant to dairy and eggs.

Thanks for the suggestions, Steve! I think I could pull in a couple of more hours! I'll see how things go! And 6 eggs for breakfast? I can barely eat two without being full until 6 o'clock! Not joking either!

Just another question, any way I can squeeze oatmeal in there? ;)

also you might not wanna eat all of the eggs whole because of the cholesterol in the yolk. So maybe just the egg whites of a few of em.

And how exactly is the cholesterol a problem?  It is a necessary hormone...

No.

Cholesterol is good for you.

Your  body  makes the vast majority of it anyway, so dietary intake of cholesterol is not problematic.
