Jerky
« on: September 18, 2006, 08:15:31 AM »
As one of the easy, lazy ways (although kinda pricey) to up my protein consumption, I've started eating a lot of jerky. I'm curious what diet-aware people think about this. It's clearly too salty, and I'm trying to cut back on salt in other areas (getting low-salt or no-salt nuts, particularly). Otherwise, the only obvious drawbacks to me are the price and it gets stuck in my teeth, so I need to be extra attentive to flossing.

you can buy a dehydrator at walmart for about 20 dollars. then you just buy some meat any type works. and dehydrate it for about 5 hours. then eat it. in the long run it costs wayyyyyy less. thats what i do.

Nice idea! For the moment, the lazy  wins over the cost for me. But that's bound to change at some point. We used to dehydrate fruits a lot, and never tried meat because we didn't want to mix the fruit & meat in the dehydrator.

Anyway, I foolishly hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

Dang, I guess this is getting off-topic, but I didn't know people had moose farms! I've certainly seen buffalo meat (sausages, particularly) in stores, but never moose meat. Is that a serious specialty item? What's the market for it?

There's a few places at the market near me that have chicken, salmon and pork jerky.  The chicken was awesome, the just marinade it with some paprika and Joe's hot sauce.
