Front Flip help
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:50:44 PM »
Hey. I'm new to the forum so idk if this goes here or not. So srry if this isnt the place, but i jst started practicing my front flips into my local public pool. I can go over enough to just barely get 360 degree rotation... but wen i do it i kind of shoot forward instead of up. i wanna go up so i can get the form down but everytime i do it i end up shooting str8 forward still... i take about a 10 ft. jog nd then do my flip into the pool. should i try slowing down my jog? or shorten my distance. plz help. thnk u.  :)

I have a crappy front flip and am not generally comfortable throwing it...but I do understand the basics of the movement.  Your first objective should be to gain height before you go into the actual tuck.  If you've never heard the term blocking before look it up I'm not gonna explain it...too lazy.  Getting that down should increase height dramatically.  You should also look into how throwing your arms can help you get height and add torque to your tuck.  I'd suggest going to a gymnastics gym to at least have a qualified person give you real tips.

Public pools are  a pretty dangerous place to learn. I've seen more cracked skull at the pool more than anywhere else.  I would suggest learning at a public park( playgrounds have the soft padded ground) or the  beach.

As far as not getting enough height.. general rule in gymnastics is you go where your head goes. So if your head is leaning fwd in inticapation for the flip you will go fwd or down.  If you stay straight or even a little arched you will go up.

If you really want help then you need to post a video.

sala:  from a quick view of the vid I would say  keep your head up in the take off and  you dont try to spot the ground err... water.   A front flip is a harder skill in gymnastics because it is known as a "blind landing"  you just have to trust your air sense.

Streek,  your set ( take off) looked good but after that I lost sight of you. So I cant comment on anything else. Please post one just of your flip.

Since your just learning, your front looks pretty good.

To get more height you need to keep your head up more... rule is "you go where your head goes"  if you look at your video your head is anticipating the flip so its leaning foward. Once you jump you go fwd instead of up.  Really Good fronts and even standing fronts  the flipper will have his back arched for the take off ( leaning fwd is hollow, arched backwards is arched).

soo dont try to spot the ground?

Nope, dont spot the ground. As soon as you start looking for the ground you will start turning.  to spot your landing you can look for the horizon in front of you.
