since your new you should be worrying about your mandings, not your shoes.

mandings = landing + man = work on landing a man before you worry about the shoes you wear

i agree. you really should worry more about technique. shoes arent what parkour is about.
keep it free and true

Ok, you should work on your landings. But i don't see how that is relevent to shoes.

I can only vouch for the Asics, and Pegasus. I use the latter mainly. They are both great but the pegasus fits my foot better. Go to your local shoe store and try them on. Figure out which one you like.

well say you buy a three houndred dollar shoe with all sorts of maxed out coushing in them, sure you landing will be ok when you have THAT shoe, but with all that coushin it is very likley that you will learn your landing incorrectly. many people walk incorrectly on account of all the  extra padding in the shoe. If you have a good landing you will be able to use any shoe, if any at all. if you only have good shoes, then you are limiting yourself. and in the long run hurting your skills, and your most likely your knees.

You know, I agree with your point Manilla, but I've yet to wear a pair of shoes, even with "aftermarket" insoles, that really made THAT much of a difference in landing once you get up more than a few feet. DO you really feel that there are shoes that are padded enough that a bad landing wouldn't matter or wouldn't be noticed?

Back to the point, this is realyl no different than any other shoe question. Find some that are confortable that you like, make sure the soles feel soft and sticky, not hard and plasticky. Then make sure they don't have too many small, separate pieces, because these will rip off easily. If they meet those two criteria, it really doesn't matter what brand. Get shoes with a cross training or running sale though, not a flat skate sole. Land on the balls of your feet. Read the tutorials :)

'course im still gonna have proper landing technique, ive been jumping from things 2 times my height since I was 5, so ive got the "dont hurt your ankles or knees" thing down pretty well.

No amount of technology can ever replace good technique in any area obviously, however I was just wondering which you guys recomended  ;)

Ive decided to go with the pegasus and they feel great   :D

thanks

this isnt to you Auster, but i dunno about you guys, but im getting kinda sick of seeing "i've been jumping off my 12 ft porch since i was [insert redicuously young age]"  it doesnt matter how long you've been doing it, Murphy's Law, it can still happen. anyway, nice pick on the pegasus

well...i think i'm in a uniquely good position to answer the question.  I have both shoes.  i got the merrells for parkour, and after realizing that they aren't so great to run in (for long distances), i got the air pegasus for crosscountry.

ill try to break down how they compare to each other:

Pegasus:
lighter than the merrells
better cushioning (but yea, see above discussion on that)
much easier to run long distances in

Merrells:
much better grip...like wow style. true story: i tried to get up a wall in the nikes, and tried for a good half hour straight, and did not succeed.  Next day, i came back with the merrells, got it first try.
more durable
lower center of gravity...i always feel less likely to roll my ankles in these.

pretty much its a tradeoff.  the nikes are sweet for running, and have decent grip and nice cushioning, but a high center of gravity and can fall apart kinda quickly if you do parkour in them.  the merrells are no fun for long runs in, but they grip like none other and last forever, the cushioning isn't as good, but they're more stable.

I continue to advocate the merrell but I don't have any experiance or thus partially towards the pegasus

I've heard it said that merrells are a good beginner's shoe, maybe take that into account

I run Pegasus, because of the light weight, and the amount of control i can advocate over them with my foot.
