Paul "Leon" Mederos Community Interview
« Reply #60 on: October 09, 2009, 12:34:11 PM »
Grayson - Leon, What is your basic conditioning routine, I'm always curious of how other traceurs train (do you do Starting Strength, gymnastic/bodyweight workouts, etc.?)

My basic conditioning routine lately has been a mixture of cardio, endurance, and gymnastics skills. Lately I’ve been focusing a lot on gymnastics skills (handstands, presses, holds, bar work, random bodyweight stuff.) I’ve been fortunate enough to have a sweet gymnastics facility on my campus  with an abundance of awesome gymnast friends that don’t mind if I jump in on their conditioning. Outside I’ve been doing a bunch of cardio exercises, mostly jumping around stairs… lots of circuit stuff. I get my main conditioning from my parkour though. I do a LOT of repetition, I try to climb things in the hardest way possible, I try lots of unusual balance and clinging, etc. Just have fun with your environment and do it over and over again!

Muse_of_Fire - Leon, I can't imagine you ever being less than completely positive/happy. What's your secret? How do you stay so positive all the time? Do you ever get discouraged/upset, and if so, what do you do when that happens?

My secret? MILKSHAKES! Hahaha no I’ve been really lucky in life. I’ve had a wonderful family and great friendships. I’ve always had a place to sleep and a meal to eat.  The internet has given me the option to learn whatever I want and the ability to be whomever I feel. So I figure I should always strive to help those who are less fortunate than I, because not everyone can say their needs are satisfied. Helping others really keeps me positive all the time :) If I ever get discouraged or upset, I have something to turn to that will make me happy… even if the only thing I have left to be thankful for is that I’m still alive… because every single day is a gift given to us to make the best of!
Elet ET - What kind of bow/ how long have you been/ how often do you shoot?
I have a simple Solo longbow from Manchester. Only been shooting for about a year now, shoot at least once a week!

TR - LOL.. omg this makes me laugh so much.. Like wow... how special do you guys think you are...?

I’m very special ☺

Andy Keller - You've had great success building a strong community at Virginia Tech. What do you consider to be the keys to building a strong college/community presence? Are there any issues that you would warn others about? Any secrets to success?

Perseverance is the key. Even if you’re the only one interested, set a schedule and do it, stick to it every single week. Having a scheduled session and holding it every week will build trust with anyone else who is interested. Even if no one shows, you should be there just in case! The second key is Confidence. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been doing parkour… if you’re confident that you can help bring people in (that doesn’t necessarily mean teaching them yourself… you can bring people in by showing them resources like APK) and that you can make a difference in their life, then you’ll be good. Know your discipline. Know why you train. Know what keeps you going. Knowing those things will keep it strong in you, and other people who come will see that passion and strength in you and they’ll easily follow you can keep trying!! I do have to warn you against one thing, and that’s complacency. Always try different things. Jam at different places, hold your sessions differently, explore for new hotspots, come up with new ideas for training etc etc. Getting complacent will get you tired of leading, and when you’re tired of leading and there is no one else to pass the torch of passion to, then its game over for that community until a leader comes by. SO BE A STRONG LEADER AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!!

Adam McC - Leon! What do you do when you feel like your progress is at a halt. Any tips for taking it to the next level?

I take a break. Learn a new skill. Recently I felt at a standstill so I took a break… and picked up Archery! It was great! From there I took a look at my conditioning, got a few friends to join me and started doing some things differently, and then I got inspired by a few videos along the way and BOOM, all the sudden I flew by the level of  training I was stuck at haha

Cody Beltramo - How can you jump so far? ...............are you part kangaroo?

I’m half Brasilian, that’s why.

Ozzi - What do you tribute your broad jump to? What would be your best advice to beginners that would not be the cliche one? Whats the best experience that being in the tribe has given you? How can I be like you

I tribute my broad jump mostly to my parents haha. They put me in martial arts since I could stand, and I played soccer from the moment I could walk. I feel that those two physical activities really developed my strength and coordination as I grew up and it’s just stuck with me. I’m sure some of it is genetic, and another bit of it is how much I condition my legs (explosive pistols and the like…)

Best beginner’s advice that’s not cliché… hmmm… follow your heart? =P Hahaha I don’t know, maybe that they should believe in themselves. I don’t hear that often enough.

Best experience of being on the Tribe is by far the opportunity to have met such an incredible group of friends. Its crazy that I was this 16 year old dude on a team with college kids from all across the country… and now these guys are some of my best friends. Sure, traveling is fun and I enjoy helping people, but the friendship is definitely the best part!

Why would you want to be like me when you can be 10 times better than me? I’m just a pitiful dude. Ozzi, you’ve got such awesome potential… you help so many people out with everything you do, you are a role model to so many people. You can and already do make an incredible difference in a number of peoples lives. How can I be more like you??

Skipper - Did playing soccer increase your leg strength, leon? or did you increase your leg strength FOR soccer at some point?

Mixture of both. Obviously playing soccer increased strength, but my coaches drilled us pretty hard with lots of different training exercises that I can only remember as hell hahaha

Charles Moreland - Since you first began training, what has been your longest break from training and why?

Longest break from training…. Hmmm… probably no longer than a month, and it would be because I reached a plateau and felt I couldn’t pass it. I’ve never been injured badly (minor sprain, non-parkour related) so nothing there has held me back. I remember there was this hell-ish month in my sophomore year of college that I had a huge computer science program due and it was kicking the crap out of me!

WAIT! Now that I remember back, I think I stopped training for about 2-3 months in my first year. When I first started I was all about big jumps and back flips… and my knees  and lower back started killing me. Luckily I realized how stupid I was so I completely stopped any activity for a few months to let my knees recover, then I Slowly strengthened my lower back with a bunch of stretching for back and knees. Since then I’ve taken progress as slow as I can hold it and it’s been worth it !

Zayn - leon how do you feel about belle quiting fo a while? just wondering, are you you that same boat?

Its about time. I feel that everyone should have breaks in anything they do. I’m a huge fan of interdisciplinary arts and studies. One of my favorite titles (if you can call it that) is Jack of All Trades, Master of None… or the Renaissance man. I take that to mean that one should be well versed in a number of different activities to become well rounded… because it keeps your mind open and lets you view things through different lenses.
Belle can’t quit parkour, especially not since it’s such a big part of his life. But he can take a break and not completely focus on it and I think that’s very healthy and necessary. Explore life, try new things, etc etc. hahaha

Jordan Strybos - In all seriousness, since you are god at flipping, what is your favorite flip/trick?

Hmmm…I love the feeling of floating on a corkscrew done just right!

Skills - What do you think about the divide between pk/fr/add on apk??

There’s a divide? Im pretty sure they are all the same thing, but to explain it easier to beginners we state that the movements are the same but the mindsets are different…. At least that’s how I think most of us on APK view it??

David Jones - @Leon: I'm also curious about your broad jump

What about it? Want the number to my anti-gravity booster’s salesperson?? Hehe

Mradhampir - So what's your favorite exercise? What kind of work outs do you use to get such broad jumps? And what about zombies... do you think Parkour skills are going to be useful if/when zombies attack?

Favorite exercise is probably any random gymnastics skills but if I had to pick one I’d say pull ups! I can never do enough of those. For my broad jumps… hmm lots of squats, pistols, and core workouts! Nothing too specific. And zombies? I’m SOOOO ready for zombies… parkour will be essential!

Zayn - this maybe a waist of a question but yes what about zombies? are we ready?-really though how do you go about doing double kongs and such?i lose all my monetum and only achieve minor distance compared to others. (talking about you pros, and vets)

Rule #1 – Cardio. Double legs… hmmm.. I say practice long diving kongs until you are super comfortable. It’s difficult to give you specific advice without a video, care to PM me a video of your attempt?

Elektrik - DO you have a trick for not wrecking your knees when you land laterally rotating tricks such as the sideflip?

Yeah, practice landing NOT laterally… make sure your knees and feet are pointing in the same direction. That’s why you shouldn’t attempt any side flips from really far up unless you can twist yourself right before impact.  Its hard to do, but with practice its fairly easy and can get comfortable.

Usg_ishimura - what do you do in the off season to train (like here in colorado when it is snowing outside)

Hmm for me there is no off season. If it’s wayyy too cold outside I train inside with bodyweight stuff. Pushup[s/pullups, gymnastics core exercises, presses,  squats, pistols, etc. Invent games… me and my friends have a Swear Word game where we do certain exercises when we swear… or when we say a certain word or something. But here where I live, it’s rarely ever bad enough that I cannot go outside… and even when it is (like a tropical storm or whatever) then I still enjoy going outside for the challenege. I keep it safe tho, just basic ground level conditioning to see how it fares in extreme weather!

Jake matthew - How do you stay motivated to keep training, especially when you've been failing a lot, or just feeling like you're not progressing?

Its easy for me because I have so many places of motivation. I have a lot of close friends that do parkour with me and when I go out and train with them, their enthusiasm carries over to me. I have to really thank people like Knox, Jarvis, Spyder, Sushil, and Travis as people who within the past year have really kept me motivated. Then of course theres Oleg and 3Run with their crazy videos. But I get the MOST motivation from beginners. I always teach a newbie class once per week, and the fire in their spirits really keeps me going.

And if all else fails, TAKE A BREAK like I mentioned earlier to Adam McC.

Parkourfan72 - Yo I'm New at parkour and my fear is When i do a monkey vault my feet will get got and I'll land on my face. Any tips?

Progression. Work on putting hands on the wall and just jumping to bring your butt up and hips over your hands. Then work on getting both feet on the wall. Then both feet on the wall and walk off, then do it! Make sure you have the perfectly sized wall with grass on either side to help with the mental part.

Bao - How are you? How's the good life?

Excellent! I miss you dude, we have to jam sometime. When are you guys hosting another jam? We just had out #5 VA statewide in VT, it’s a shame we didn’t see any NC guys :( but then again I didn’t post on your forums so it’s my bad… I SUCK!

Christian Greene - Also curious about your broad jump, what is the max measured distance you have and do you do any specific training for it,if so what? How did you get started on parkour?

Max measured distance… I don’t remember. 11’ or so? I don’t really care to measure haha. No specific training, just lots of conditioning!

I got started on parkour by finding it in a Spanish magazine for my Spanish class in high school Saw a picture of a dude doing a flip off a wall and I always wanted to learn that, so I googled his name, ‘David Belle’. Hahaha. Found his first video and I was hooked from there!

Cheeseontop - how can i condition to jump higher? what workouts are the most effective for upper body strength? how many times a week should i do these workouts?

Hmmm I don’t have many specifics. I know youre asking me personally but I would say ask Steve Low or Chris Salvato or Charles or any number of fitness experts on our Fitness forum. As for how often you should train, I say as often as you can! I try to train 4 or 5 times a week.

Wenxin yang - 'Sup Leon. I was wondering, do you guys like get free Ariakes since you're sponsored my K-swiss?

I’m not sure what our current status is, but in the past yes we have received free ariakes!

Bboy ninja - Hey I just wanted to know three things, how fast can you run a mile, how many push ups can you do and how long can you hold a handstand, thanks for your time!

Run a mile? Oh boy I haven’t timed myself in awhile. I’ve always been SOOOO bad at endurance until this year when I really started focusing on it. I’d say 6 minutes 30 seconds perhaps? As for pushups, is this in one go? I can probably nail between 70-90 in one sitting with no break or rest…. But in a circuit workout I think Ive hit moer than 300, its in my log somewhere. I can hold a handstand until I get bored…. Maybe 2 minutes haha... thanks for your question!!

Matthew W - Leonn, do you feel the love? How often to you train? And for how long? What's your training/conditioning routine like in general? After or before school/work, what, how, when? Just pretty much how you go about getting your training in?

Oh I feel it. I feel it GOOOOoooood.

My training routine is very random. I think that’s what I like best about it. Some days I might be in the gymnastics room for 3 hours killing myself,  other days I might do a light 45 minute parkour session.  I fit them in whenever I have time. School, work, and socialities really take too much of my time… and I hate set schedules so I have a very fluid one. I don’t think I’ll ever have 2 weeks in my life that are the same.

LokiRagnorok - Have you ever thought of making simple games like capture the flag, dodge ball, and so on and mixing them with jams? just for fun =D

First off, sweet name. Yes, we’ve incorporated a bunch of games like that in our jams from time to time. A favorite of mine is zombie tag hehehe

Christian Greene - What's your shoe size? Can you send me a pair of ariakes?

10.5. If you buy some from the APK store (I think we do that still??) then I will personally ship you the pair and include a nice note haha!

Anthony Serafano - Can I have a sumo re-match? Maybe with legit referees/spectators that notice your foot go out of the ring. Also, Leon, do you have any questions for me?

Sumo re-match is granted. But you won didn’t you? AND YES I HAVE QUESTIONS! I can has cake?

Mradhampir - I have to write a persuasive speech... and i can't think of anything, I'm literally at a point of asking a complete stranger pretty much... any ideas for a speech?

Might be too late, but why not write a speech convincing people that nuclear energy is much more viable alternative today then it was 50 years ago after Three Mile Island and the Chernobyl incident? You can talk about INPO, local state federal international and industry regulartions. Talk about how efficient the technology has been. Talk about Hubberts peak, how our fossil fuel supplies are doomed and how nuclear energy is much cleaner! You can make a speech from 5 minutes to 50 minutes with that material at least…

Chris Kessler - Boxer's or briefs?

Boxers. From Abercrombie and Fitch no less.

JakeS - I am new to parkour, and have no experience, though I have been making an attempt, but I am having a hard time finding the best start. I am not in the best shape, and I was wondering in your experience, do you think it better for me to start a program that gets me into better shape before I begin some really serious parkour training, or should I use parkour training as a means to get into shape? Any advice to a proper take off would help me tremendously.

Do a bit of both. Also, where do you live? Try and find local traceurs since they will help you out a bunch. PM me with a few more details, such as age, physical shape, etc. and I’ll help you out!

Skierboy - I am moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota in december from london. Do you know any places nearby where classes are held or places to practise are?

Sorry I honestly have no idea. Check out our local state forums and see if anyone is in your area!

Anthony Serafano - Have you ever looked like   ?

That is me actually, making a WTF face as I power to SSJ 4.

Jarv - What is your favorite cookie?

Ahhh… Muse of Fire once made me the best cookies I have ever had in my life… I wish I could have more of those delectable pieces of heaven.

S Leger - If you were an octopus, would you do underwater parkour?

I think the obvious answer is yes. With 8 arms, how can you not flow??

Andrew Granite Wilson – Leon, what is your favorite vault? When did you learn it? How long did it take you to learn it?

No specific favorite… I’d say the reverse safety vault if I had to give it a name though. Learned it last year, took me about 30 minutes to get it fluid. I love popping it over a wall!

Anthony Serafano - Have you ever cried? EVER? Did you ever think you were a hat person? What would you do if the world became flat?

YOU FAIL SIR! YOU ASKED TOO MANY QUESTIONS! But I’ll answer cause Im kind. I’ve cried numerous times in the past, I like emotions (but I am not an emotionally fella… sadly… haha!) Im not a hat person, I love my flowy hair and SO DO YOU. World became flat? Psh, that could never happen.

Yow - How old were you when you started parkour?

15 and a half! 21 now… its been a good 6 years.

Jeremy Osborn - What do you think works when trying to make a thriving Parkour community?

I answered this above in Andy Keller’s question. Confidence and perseverance !

Rebecca Myers - Have you ever considered going by Noel? (For those who are a bit slow this evening, it's just his name backwards.) Pepsi or Coke? (Neither is not an option) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

Never thought of Noel… Leon isn’t even my real name haha.

Coke, hands down. Pepsi can’t even compete.

Anywhere in the world? I’d like to live all over the place… traveling like a nomad visiting different cultures. My soul has no home except for love!

Steph Hagan - If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Tiger or some other big cat. So graceful and powerful!

Jarv - Which traceur are you inspired by the most right now?

Funny that you’re the one who asks this. Look up and you’ll see that YOU are actually one of my top inspiring traceurs!

Divinedragon - Ok tell the truth, have you ever pushed a kid out the way cause you thought they were gonna get to the jungle gym first? Have you ever thought of being trained personally by a cat? Have you ever considered challenging a cat to a duel?

Probably pushed a kid out of the way when I was smaller, I was a brat back then. I have seriously been trained by a cat… I watch their movements and imitate their grace. I love cats even though Im deathly allergic to them! I have considered dueling a cat, but they would win thanks to my allergies. They are sooooo cute…

Alex frogger Brown - yo leon, wat kinda music do u listen to? wat ur fav band?

Listen to all sorts of things but just because their new album came out last week I have to say that Paramore is my favorite band at the moment. I can’t stop listening to Brand New Eyes!
