national jam, sounds good....the most important thing is picking a good date...

on another note idk if anyone has ever tried, but I've been curious about this for a while and I decided on trying to find out what the city and county of honolulu's park and recreations thinks about parkour on city and county park property.  I basically asked on what grounds have I been kicked out of city and county parks for, since there are no rules specifically against parkour, free running, free walking, or any other word that describes what we do.  I'm only asking out of curiosity, I'll post the results of my inquire when they write back.

Post 1600! National jam sounds good. So what's your idea of a good date? Mine is dinner, maybe Thai, followed by
... Maybe check last year for the different comments...

Congrats on level 2 ADAPT cert, Ozzi!

Ryan - Whose opinion did you ask for at Parks & Rec? You'd probably get different answers at every level of administration.

Leg update: Running, jumping [small kine strides, vaults] are ok. Did some deep squats/qm on Sunday, and can feel it in my knees. There's an area where I have nerve damage, and can't feel touch. Yet.

tried different offices I thought might be willing to make a statement...at least i know they've looked at the email since I get a receipt.  I think when I find time I'll just call them.

Um and for national jam, In regards to picking an appropriate date.  I know most people from mainland or other areas probably wont be able to make it during October or February (due mostly to school), but at least from what I've seen that's when round trip tickets are cheapest cause it's not during peak traveling seasons...so it would be likely people could find round trip tickets from $300-$450 if they shop at the right time.  I know lots of the PK/FR demographic is in school and this might make it inconvenient, but how many college or highschool students do you think could afford to come down during their breaks when travel costs are at their peaks anyway?  That's why I think it would make more sense to pick a time that working practitioners could schedule into where it would be also cheapest to come down here.

Basically I'm saying we should schedule a national jam whenever ticket prices are cheapest, and not during winter, summer, or spring break...simply because I think most people who could afford to make it down here probably arent in school and could come down whenever they could request off, which I'm hoping is when travel costs are low.  I think travel costs are a big enough barrier for us to think about pandering to those who can afford to come down, and not the ones who wish they could come down...I don't want to sound mean or anything, but that's the reality I see based on the kind of people who came last year.

Still in the state of Misery, I mean Missouri, here.  :'(

Supposed to get frost tonight... You might think with my name that I like the cold weather.

That would be a negatory.

Meh, I've had better. I've had FAR worse, so it's going OK.

At least the people there are nice. We are still in the pre-design stage of our project, so really not a lot of interesting anything happening, mostly just research. :(

At least I have a new puppy to help keep my life exciting and tiring! Thank goodness she's finally almost fully potty trained.

Is that what I'm sensing? I thought it was eggs and cheese. ;D
It's up to you guys. Is it more work than it's worth?

Frosty - congrats on the puppy. I hope mild amounts of interesting start happening.

'kay finally move into the new house. I am back now.

I have to agree with Ryan that we should hold it on an off tourism month. But we better give people at least 3 months ahead time warning.

I jotted down some notes... I didn't realize it was going to be > hour. There should have been a warning label!
Because I've pretty much trained alone, I haven't picked up this stuff in this structured of a way. It's been more the trial and fail method. I spent too much time watching this video, but at least it's got me thinking. These are just my notes. They may not be the most important things - I may have missed some key points.

Parkour plus strength and flexibility training... "be strong to be useful"...

Training should be skill and power biased. Focus on building technical skills. % of max potential = train to develop power, speed, and strength. Strength transfers well, endurance doesn't.

Effectiveness = safety [physical motor skills + recognizing/reducing risk] + fluidity [capacity to maintain momentum] + speed [understanding techniques + applying force] + mental strength [overcoming fear + psych pressures].

Physical development = strength [novice improve 1 workout to next... intermediate hit plateaus only hit PRs 1/wk, 1/mo... advanced may only hit PRs a couple times per year]

Beginner focus on movements - fast adaption - strength
Correcting for raised heel shoes and too much sitting
QM + vaulting, running for speed [stride, cut & dodge, approaches & recoveries after vaults], jumping, climbing [swinging, hanging, underbars]
Understand how to progress - break down moves into manageable chunks.
Kong, dash, climb-up, landing progressions [examples given 27:30 - 48:30]

Intermediate focus on flow - conditioning + speed
Live training - training under pressure, adaptability when you are reacting as it comes at you. Time trials, races, adaptive [don't know what's coming], player interaction [danger increases = monkey tag [ground level] -> flat ground tag -> duck duck goose tag, etc.]

Power training = quality + small reps [ie 10-15 wall passes = as soon as it decreases, stop. ie kong for distance, tictac for height/ distance, standing broad jump] Volume + hard parkour will destroy gains
Speed training = over a course. 5 to 30 second route. "Physically easy". Rest fully.
Stamina training = ie 5-10 reps of a 30 second route. No rest. [or only partial recovery to start] 3-15 minutes. No super-long stuff it will crush you. Endurance training will interfere with power/ speed training.

Advanced focus on mental strength?

I like it...
I think advance is all of the above, plus yes, mental training, also just finding your won style, flow, way of moving and then, moving to other areas of training. Rick climbing, trail running, other things that will enhance or complement. Not a must, just my opinion, if you want to be advance get the strong grip of a rock climber, the precision running of a trail runner, etc.

What video was it G?

It's that Rafe Kelley vid. He didn't really go into advanced, because he didn't feel he was at that level. It was more about training beginning and intermediate traceurs.

He found beginners' weakest area was climbing. In the obstacle runs, that was the area of most fails.
There was another point about using parkour to train for parkour - don't need plyometrics, because it's basically same.

--- --- ---
I'm back at beginner level. 3 months is too much time to lose, despite trying to be active in other ways.
Which reminds me - has anyone been in touch with Derek? How's he healing up?

I think hes been diving, seen some of his pic and videos. Havent heard from him in a while.

Agree, climbing is tricky.. after letting my shoulder heal for over a month, my climb ups are slow. Did a few muscle ups today and felt good, so might be ready for climbs up a full power. I was a bit hindered last time.

How you been G?

I sent Derek a short note on FB.

I can sprint again. I caught flu from boss, tho, so no good workouts the past week.
I'm enjoying beginner vaults, taking Razor kick scooter to work [1 mile], foot placement/ beginner stride stuff.

Video project at work is going - but I realized most of my earlier footage was worthless, and had to go shoot it again. I need to try to finish Monday. I'm WAAAAAAY behind schedule. I'd better get back to it.
