My eye won't stop twitching
« on: February 04, 2009, 05:26:04 PM »
My right eye has been twitching so much lately, it's ridiculous. Once in a while it'll be my left eye, and sometimes it'll be both at the same time. It's not constant, but it's irritatingly frequent.

What is causing this, and what can I do to stop it?

Ha, don't worry about it man. Happens to me all the time, it's pretty normal.  ;)

I can't give you a very reliable scientific reason, but from what I know, I think it has something to do with your brain thinking your body is in motion, and your brain tells your eyes to keep up with your body? Heck, that might be complete bogus, I'm just passing on what I've heard.

Usually if I blink a few times or focus on one spot it stops.   :-\

What are your sleeping habits? A twitch in your eyelid may occur when you do not get enough sleep. If you average 5 hours of shut-eye a night, then you best needs ta be gettin' to sleep son!!!  ;D

Weird, hick slang aside, get some rest and it should go away!

I actually can't give you any true scientific data on this either, if anyone has any, I'd love to hear it.

I can give you a theory I heard though.

The twitching segment *might* be a dying muscle cell.  When a cell is chronically denervated, it usually isn't isolated.  Therefore, in a attempt to keep other cells around it living longer, it fires nervous impulses with its last "life" for lack of better wording.  This stimulates the nerves directly around it, and gives them a longer chance of survival.  As muscle cells don't really split after a certain age, you can't really replace it so keeping them alive is important.  Muscle cells not stimulated die as a principle otherwise known as "atrophy"---and I'm not talking about size atrophy as much as degeneration.

Anyway, that's the theory.  I don't back up that one one bit.

:).  And since i don't know why, I can't really give you a treatment.  but... drink water, exercise, and stay healthy, eat well, etc etc :)

Dont let your eyelids atrophy. A traceur's eyelids are the most neglected muscles in the body. I suggest you Start a High intensity training regimen to strengthen your Eyelids. Try squeezing them closed really hard, then opening. Weighted barbell lifts arent a bad Idea either.

toobad the eyelid is actually a muscle that works based on RELAXATION... squeezing them would relax em more :). (unless you are talking about the oricular orbis mm)

Well if they were relaxed, they wouldn't be twitching... would they?

Usually I just punch whatever is twitching pretty lightly and it goes away.. but i wouldn't recommend punching your eyes.  [WTF]

Hmm... if you're getting enough sleep I'd try to eat bananas. According to my AP Biology teacher, eye twitching can be caused by lack of potassium and other electrolytes in nerve endings or something like that (I forgot, it's been a year ;)) so try some potassium (read: bananas). Good luck.

stop drinking caffiene or those pesky energy drinks, and mixed with lack of sleep usually caused mine, and of course, it could your atrophy eyelids, the apocolypse, zombie invasion, or alien probing but u could also go with the punching of the eye HOPE IT HELPS!!  ;)
There is no reason to have a plan B, cause all it does is distract from plan A

Sorry, I couldn't really help. Hopefully it'll go away in a couple of days, but if it doesn't you may want to go to your doctor (or at least call him/her).

it's all cool baby

i'm pretty sure it was because my body was stressed out due to being in a weight training/conditioning class 6th hour, then going straight to rugby practice after that and then usually to band practice or work, all the while not getting much to eat/water to drink during band practice/work

in any case, the twitching has died down lately.
