Explaining Parkour.
« on: October 28, 2008, 04:08:59 PM »
How do you explain parkour to people? This is slightly similar to this thread http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php?topic=12965.0, but there's a difference, and I didn't want to steal the thread from him. So yeah, when you tell people you do parkour and they ask what it is, how do you explain it? I've found that it's pretty hard to give people a basic definition of what PH/FR is. I usually just say like, it's about getting from one place to the other in the most efficient way possible, by climbing up walls and jumping over rails and stuff, but it's hard to explain.

I say "Awesome". If they're actually interested, I refer 'em here.

Feel free to use anything you see in my explanation. For the quick short answer just say "It is moving through the environment as quickly and swiftly as possible using only the human body." Or "Mastering movement" or anything else along those lines.

Application: Moving through your environment intelligently to move through as quickly as possible.
Practice: Taking the least effective path in the most effective way.

Short and sweet. I like it.

yeah, but people don't really understand what you mean when you say it's moving efficiently through the environment. i usually end up having to talk about running up walls and vaulting rails, and then people just call me a ninja wannabe hahaha. it's just something that's hard to explain to people.

Well and there's two parts too... the physical part, which people usually understand, and then... the rest (philosophy, power of community, etc.).
